5. | A* 2019-03-13 09:03:06 Marcus Richert <...address hidden...>
Comments: | OK, I see your point, but I disagree. Take daijr's definition, for example, where they specifically mention アイロニー in sense 1, and prog, which makes no distinction between irony and sarcasm in its translations of the example sentences. Also I'm not seeing anything for the 2nd sense that makes me think of a "rhetorical device", while nikk has "また、遠まわしに意地 悪を言ったりしたりすること" for the first sense. "incongruity between the actual result of a sequence of events and the normal or expected result" (sense 2) a) 1) of "irony" in M-W) is closer but I don't think it quites fit the much more straightforward kokugo definitions (思い通 りに行かない様、具合の悪い様 etc.). Nikk even gives 難儀 (hardship) as a synonym for this sense. daijs has the example "皮肉なめ ぐりあわせ" - "an ironic meeting" would be a weird translation here, but "an unexpected meeting" makes perfect sense. |

Comments: | "var." can be used at the end when you want to specify that it's a variety but you don't know the variety name, similarly to how you can use "Felis sp." to specify that it is an unnamed or unspecified species of cat. |

Comments: | Dunno. I'm following the bit Rene wrote for the editorial policy: "For varieties, the abbreviation "var." must be used." I see that it's usually in the form "Brassica oleracea var. botrytis", and these dangling "var." are the minority. From what I'm reading about camelias these entries refer to different cultivars - there are really only two "vars". We'd better check with Rene - he's the expert in this field. |
|
4. | A* 2019-03-07 07:44:06 Marcus Richert <...address hidden...>
Comments: | Normally in latin nomenclature you'd have the "var." bit followed by the name of the variety, e.g. something like "Camellia japonica var. kagurajishi", right? If we're using "var." to mean "variety of Camelia japonica", might it be better to phrase it like that? |
