Refs: | Saw this discussed in Jim's reddit post: https://www.reddit.com/r/LearnJapanese/comments/b04h8e/usually_kana_tags_in_wwwjdic_jisho_etc/ person 1: "nothing is "always kanji", and anything that's truly "always kana" wouldn't even have any kanji forms listed...so both of those tags would be completely pointless." person 2: "You mean like する? 100% Kana all the time, most IMEs won't even convert this." So I checked my Windows 10 standard IME and found that it indeed would not even show 為る for する, nor does my android google keyboard. That essentially makes 為る archaic, doesn't it? (alternatively, if we implement the suggested rareKanji, this would perhaps be candidate for that) |

Comments: | OK, I see your point, but I disagree. Take daijr's definition, for example, where they specifically mention アイロニー in sense 1, and prog, which makes no distinction between irony and sarcasm in its translations of the example sentences. Also I'm not seeing anything for the 2nd sense that makes me think of a "rhetorical device", while nikk has "また、遠まわしに意地 悪を言ったりしたりすること" for the first sense. "incongruity between the actual result of a sequence of events and the normal or expected result" (sense 2) a) 1) of "irony" in M-W) is closer but I don't think it quites fit the much more straightforward kokugo definitions (思い通 りに行かない様、具合の悪い様 etc.). Nikk even gives 難儀 (hardship) as a synonym for this sense. daijs has the example "皮肉なめ ぐりあわせ" - "an ironic meeting" would be a weird translation here, but "an unexpected meeting" makes perfect sense. |

Comments: | Only 土 is ateji, and since the gloss is "dirt-poor", marking this as ateji looks like a mistake. The x-ref offers an explanation. There are ド-prefixed terms scattered about, and a lot of the others xref ド[2] as well, so this doesn't seem too out of place. どん百姓 seems more common than than this term, so the xrefs there seem backwards. Comments: | Changed [aux] into [aux-v], edited notes to clarify word origin and to correct the following point: ませ does not attach to the imperative of another verb, it attaches to the 連用形 just as ます does: なさいます→なさいませ; なさい, いらっしゃい、etc being used as Imperatives without ませ is due to its omission: those verbs were not originally Imperatives themselves and became what they are due to ませ's subtraction. |

The hinative comment (last reference) is particularly detailed, not sure if that's enough for [form] or anything else though. (dictionary does not mark as such). Reasonable number of book results. Was going to change xref as [see=仕方がない[1,2]] because I'm not sure this carries any of the special nuances we've attached specifically to the どうしようもない entry. But I'm not confident, so I'm leaving it and just changing the simple things. sankoku defn. in its entirety is "仕方がない". daijs. mentions どうしようもない. 為ん方無い is the daijs form. Of ~30 google book references, ~25 are dictionaries. Leaving as [rK] because of daijs. |

Comments: | Thanks for providing references. I wonder how common it really is, though. I don't see any images that seem to match this on Google (I tried カビガビ 画像, ガビガビ 写真, but the only pic that seemed to match is from one of the references... and maybe one more). It's kind of hard to determine whether it applies to pictures with lots of jpg compression, low resolution, or both. If it's not that common, I think it might be safer to not include this sense. |

|
Comments: | Add another gloss, also given in Japanese and English Wikipedia entries(and, I think, more immediately comprehensible to a layman). According to wikipedia "screen doors" are ceiling height "edge doors"/"automatic platform gates" are not. In my experience with the Tokyo metro, "screen door" would be the exception. I've definitely seen them though. |
