Comments: | I thought it was our policy to only use id on expressions (see comments on 狼煙, 月並み, 電池切れ). The vast majority of those 218 entries are expressions that end with nouns. There are several on that list (e.g. 波, 空気 難民) that I would definitely not consider idioms. |

7. | A* 2019-12-26 22:10:35 Marcus Richert <...address hidden...>
Comments: | We have 218 entries with n+id tags, many of them compound nouns like this one. If we want to discuss changes to a large amount of entries, the mailing list is porbably the place for it. |
|
6. | A* 2019-12-26 21:46:29 Robin Scott <...address hidden...>
Comments: | I wouldn't consider "Christmas cake" a "group of words". It's a regular noun, and I don't believe nouns (by themselves) can be idioms. "Fruit cake" (meaning "eccentric person"), for example, isn't an idiom, but "nutty as a fruitcake" is. |

Comments: | I thought it was our policy to only use id on expressions (see 狼煙, 月並み, 電池切れ). The majority of those 218 entries are expressions, but there are a lot on that list (e.g. 波, 空気 難民) that I don't think are idioms by any definition. --- I agree there probably is an argument for dropping the id tag. |
|
8. | A* 2019-12-26 23:00:01 Rene Malenfant <...address hidden...>
Comments: | i agree that this should not be marked as an idiom and we have had some short back and forths and compound nouns being idioms in the comments of various entries, but i agree that this should be raised on the mailing list we should also consider what value the [id] label actually has. since people can disagree on what an "idiom" is, it's not clear why we even need this tag. it is usually pretty clear when a gloss does not match the literal meaning of the individual terms. i'm not sure why we need to tell people "this is an idiom" or not. to my knowledge, i've never seen another kokugo, english dictionary or J-E that bothers with an idiom tag |
