Comments: | * Split into two senses * Add more senses to usual “be loath to” – this is an old-fashioned, fancy word, hence more literary glosses first * Clarify other glosses: specifically about shunning an activity (environment etc.), not so much disliking generally. |

Refs: | meikyo たま・う【▽賜う・▽給う】 動五 終止形・連体形、ならびに連用形は、「たもう」ということも多い。その場合、現代かなづかいは「たもう」とするのが一般的。 shimeikai has no entry for たもう, but one example sentence for たまう is given as たもう 「神の与えたもうた試練」 |
|
Comments: | yeah, this is a mess. e.g. koj has three separate entries (oubunsha kogo jiten has four) for: -- たまう 【給う・賜う】 [1][v5u,vt][hon] to give たまう 【給ふ・賜ふ】 [1][v2h-s,vt][arch,hum] to receive *but it's also a v4h variant of the other たまう たも・う 【給ふ・賜ふ】 [1][v4h,vt][arch,hon] to give [1][v2h-s,vt][arch,hum] to receive but the conjugations of koj's たもう don't match the conjugation of たもう in modern japanese (described by meikyo above). for modern japanese, we need たまう=v5u, たもう=v5u-s (but only conjugates as 終止形, 連体形, 連用形) also, we generally don't give suffixes before the meaning of the standalone word, so the order should be swapped |

Comments: | Should we mark the たもう reading as not having a stem/ending boundary or conjugating? If we don't do so, some users or client software might pronounce it as タモウ or conjugate it as たもいます / たもえ. As far as I know, only some words have the cross-boundary reading giving rise to a new combination of stem + ending: 【言う】いう→ゆう→ゆった 【酔う】えう→よう→よった According to this link, 給う isn't such a word: https://oshiete.goo.ne.jp/qa/1844024.html |

Comments: | Nobody else splits "paternal blood;lineage" from "progeny" and some even have "sperm" in with one or two of those meanings but I thought it would be weird to combine them all. But maybe somebody else can come up with something better that works with just 2 senses. the "cause/source" sense ended up being moved from 4 to 5 - I tried my best to keep it as it was but since I think the 3 closely related senses (3,4,5) should come together, I had to nudge it. (but if somebody else can reduce 3,4,5 to 2 senses instead of 3, it won't move). I removed "kind, variety, quality, tone" glosses that were in sense 1entirely, not really sure where they came from. |

Comments: | GG5 labels both むくみ and ふしゅ "医". The "Igaku" glossary uses the むくみ reading. GG5 simply points ふしゅ to むくみ. I think the whole entry should be "med" and kept as one. As for "io", that was my first thought until I saw the 中辞典 and Unific entries. It's not really okurigana for むくみ so much as a masu stem of 浮腫む. It's all a bit bizarre as 浮腫/むくみ is probably a case of 義訓 so okurigana shouldn't come into it. On balance I'd go with "io". |

Comments: | I think it's healthy to be skeptical against including absolutely everything that's in daijs/daijr, but I would think the issue is more with entries that barely register online/super-rare archaicism, than extremely common but easily-picked- apart words like this one. |
|
6. | A* 2019-12-03 00:54:43 Robin Scott <...address hidden...>
Comments: | I wouldn't ordinarily take issue with お/ご- submissions that are in the kokugos, but this one is only in daijs with a rather specific definition (not just "time"). Of course, it's harmless, but in this case I'd question whether the daijs entry by itself is enough to warrant adding it (as least as a simple [pol] entry with the same gloss). |
|
5. | A* 2019-12-03 00:17:46 Marcus Richert <...address hidden...>
Comments: | But usage-wise it's also "It's time (to do something)." - "お時間ですよ", so "(your) time" needlessly narrows things down. I think the pol tag is enough. As for the entry possibly being pointless, OK, but we've agreed that common お/ご- entries that have entries in the kokugos have a place in jmdict. |
