Comments: | including these as headwords makes a mess of the entry. it's almost inconceivable to me that they would ever be provided without telling the reader without アスパラガス furigana, and all the web hits i find just seem to be websites saying "did you know asparagus is also written as 竜髭菜", etc. google image hits for 龍鬚菜 look nothing like what we normally call "asparagus" in english, and suggest that they correspond to Asparagus schoberioides, which is a different species this could perhaps take a "also written as 竜髭菜" note, but given its rarity, and the fact that no dictionary bothers, i don't think it's needed -- 実用日本語表現辞典 and a number of the other sources provided at weblio do not appear to be particularly great. if they are not one of the major kokugos, please do some additional checking at least into frequency of use |

Comments: | This entry needs a bit of an overhaul. What I'd suggest: 1. Remove the watch sense. Not in any refs. Searching 「カスケット 時計」 only turns up that single Baby G watch. 2. Remove "fishing lure". Not in any refs. Seems to be mainly the name brand of the company, in which case it should only be in namedict. 3. Keep "ornamental box", integrating "casket" as a gloss. 4. Since the newsboy sense has a different etymology ("casquette"), it needs to be its own entry. To summarize, this entry should only be "casket" as an ornamental box. There needs to be a new entry for the newsboy sense as "カスケット". |

Comments: | I'm sorry if I said that, or gave that impression, as we obviously do use abbreviations a lot. Apart from the obvious ones like "etc.", "i.e." and "e.g.", there are "usu." (457), "esp." (1977), "incl." (79), "var." (205), etc. The Shorter OED has 4 pages of abbreviations at the front. Many are field tags, but it has a lot I wouldn't bother with. To me it's about saving display space. I see we have 14 cases of "oft." This is only one character shorter than "often", and I doubt it's needed. I'll think about drafting something for the editorial policy. |
6. | A* 2019-12-18 03:18:15 Marcus Richert <...address hidden...>
Comments: | I'm fine either way, but I distinctly remember you (Jim) telling me a good number of years ago in a comment that we only use such abbreviations in notes, and I've tried to adhere to that ever since. (there's a chance I'm misremembering, but I don't think I am). Might it be an idea to make a note of it in the policy document? The words we usually abbreviate and the ones we don't, etc. |
5. | A 2019-12-17 22:26:52 Jim Breen <...address hidden...>
Comments: | Such abbreviations are fine in glosses. They're widely used in English lexicography. The main point is that they shorten the text (reducing paper/screen space) without making it harder to read. |

If you like, you can repeat the search with the omitted results included." |
Comments: | this gloss is what the images suggest. we have ハメ marked as vulg see note above; i'm not sure this is worth recording as the meaning is pretty obvious from context and it does not seem to be particularly common |
