Comments: | I think the note was fine. These forms are mentioned in the kokugos. I don't think the x-ref is needed. The kokugos point from 一国 to 一刻. According to meikyo, sense 2 is an adjective only. I don't think sense 1 is used adverbially. |

Comments: | Sense 2 is public in the 公共 sense, and sense 3 in the 表ざた sense. I put "public place" with sense 3 because it's one of daijs's examples for that sense: "「―の場に持ち出す」". That seemed logical to me because a "public place" is simply somewhere in open view; it's not necessarily publicly *owned*, unlike a public facility. |

Comments: | In response to Jim's comment that caulking is also used in metalworking: But can かしめる refer to caulking? Caulking involves inserting a (relatively) soft substance into a seam, while swaging involves squeezing or deforming a piece of metal. They are completely different processes. I checked through many pages of images of かしめる and did not see even one that looked like caulking. The e-dictionary definitions I have seen (along the lines of 接合部分にはめこまれた爪や金具を工具で打ったり締めたりして接合部を固くとめる。 「鳩目金具を- ・ める」) (to the extent that I understand them!) apply to swaging only. From what I've seen so far, "caulking" looks like a complete miss for this word. |

Users seeing a proverb gloss will assume the Japanese word is a proverb. Regarding starting glosses with "to" even if they don't conjugate... this should probably be discussed on the mailing list, but I'm vacationing right now and don't really have the time unfortunately. |

In that respect, it is no different from かわいそう. If "you cannot derive the meaning of this from the かわいそう entry", that suggests the かわいそう entry needs improving. It's the same word. Comments: | the comment is melodramatic, but i agree that it would be better to have it phrased in terms of want to be honest, i'm not even sure that it really means this. it sounds like it's just a glib expression used to describe the motive for theft, etc. when there is no real clear motive. so it doesn't actually describe the thief's motive, just one you're imparting to him. |

Comments: | Can someone else look at the explanation from that reference? I agree the label uses "欲しさ", but as I read it, it's describing a crime, so presumably it's been carried out. |
|
3. | A* 2019-12-20 01:57:27 | |
Comments: | This is blatantly wrong. it refers to the "wanting" to have money, not obtaining it. I'm kind of shocked this was accepted as an entry. |
