|
Comments: | Yes, 石鹸玉 is quite an outlier, and as the n-grams show, it's quite possibly often せっけんだま rather than しゃぼんだま. That said, I'm seeing some images of soap bubbles labelled 石鹸玉, as well as cases where they are plainly soap balls. What I suggest is adding a new 石鹸玉/石けん玉/せっけんだま entry with two senses: soap balls and soap bubbles, with the bubble sense xrefed to here with a note like "occ. read しゃぼん玉". Would that work? |

Refs: | ngrams: シャボン玉 = 504440 石鹸玉 = 722 |
|
Comments: | relatively speaking, this form is extremely rare (~0.1%). in addition, google image hits for 石鹸玉 are mostly *not* of soap bubbles, but of soap balls or seemingly irrelevant things, so it is arguably not that common absolutely either. further, there's no indication how often 石鹸玉 is expected to be read as シャボンだま without providing furigana. i'm inclined to reject |

Comments: | My first thought was "no way" as I was taught that わたし and わたくし were essentially the same. But I agree that the politeness, and slightly feminine nuance, not to mention the later senses, make it an uncomfortable combination. I've proposed a split. Aside: I first heard わたくし spoken in 1982 when we took my elder daughter (then 10) to a Girls Scouts meeting in Nagano-ken. They had a formal "promise" recital which included use of わたくし. I've also heard it used by males in formal speeches. |

Comments: | I think it should be included. Along with どころではない, it is common, in many examples, meaning not obvious, etc. They could be combined, although it would be messy. Certainly, the glosses should be aligned - Nicolas used the ones from どころではない. We already have それどころじゃない/etc. We don't need both. If this goes ahead I think それどころじゃない can be dropped. |

Comments: | Japanese pampas grass = maiden silvergrass = Miscanthus sinensis. so the meaning given here seems to mostly overlap with "尾花【おばな】 (ear of) Japanese pampas grass". we should stick with one english name for clarity おばな is a gikun reading for 草花 but not for 尾花, but nevertheless they could be merged as 尾花,草花【おばな】. depends on whether we think 草花【おばな】 is common enough to record. it's not in any of the major kokugos, only the obscurish 動植物名よみかた辞典 provided |

I can find no other source for this combination and no examples of 草花 being used for Miscanthus sinensis. While I'm reluctant to avoid something in a published dictionary, I feel this one is a step too far. |

Comments: | On reflection, I can see the case for including it but there are a couple of things to note. かわいそうに is essentially an abbreviation of かわいそうに思う; it can take a subject or function as an interjection. In that respect, it is no different from かわいそう. If "you cannot derive the meaning of this from the かわいそう entry", that suggests the かわいそう entry needs improving. It's the same word. I also don't think this is worth this amount of arguing over it so I will just go ahead and approve it. If somebody disapproves, feel free to re-open the discussion of course. |

Comments: | I support adding the かわいそうに as an expression/interjection as its own entry. Its meaning is more than just かわいそう + に so the entry will be helpful for users. It's also very common. Plus, we do already have entries for the following: お大事に 焦らずに お気の毒に which are similar. |
