Comments: | How about "uncertain information"? Even in that context, とか is being used to express some degree of uncertainly about the person's name. |

Refs: | Tanaka: きのうウィリアムズさんとかいう人が訪ねてきました。A Mr. Williams came to see you yesterday. |
|
Comments: | Looks good. My only concern is the rather common use of it to announce people. 7 of the 67 indexed Tanaka sentences have this pattern and while it sort-of fits into sense 2 with its "a (certain)", it's not really "hearsay or unconfirmed information"; it's more a formula used in such situations. I wonder if the sense can be tweaked a little to reflect that usage? |

Comments: | These are all the senses in the kokugos. Sense 2 and 3 are really the same sense, but "I hear that/rumor has it", etc. only work when the sentence *ends* with とか (as in the examples in Nicolas's link) which is why I've kept them separate. Sense 4 looks similar to sense 2 except that it's not used for hearsay. Only daijs and meikyo have it as a separate sense. Daijr has a note about it. |

The industry emerged in the late 1940s and boomed in the early 1950s. First there was blue film, a rag-tag operation of amateurs and misfits that produced twenty- minute shorts. Blue film was followed by pink film, which produced soft-porn sponsored by the major film companies to offset the loss of revenue from declining ticket sales brought about by the popularity of television. ... Comments: | I'm going to reopen this. There's a big difference between being a 1) nobleman - a person part of the nobility who in most cases held little power, and 2) being a "powerful Japanese feudal lord" who "ruled most of Japan from their vast, hereditary land holdings" (enwiki). The meaning is different enough to qualify splitting in both Japanese and English. If the two meanings in English look too similar, that can be handled by making them more different This isn't some obscure little historical issue but the word is used with both meanings today. If somebody looked up the use of "tonosama" in hyakunin isshu decks (for one example of contemporary use of the word in the Heian sense meaning) and walked away with the understanding that the "tonosama" cards of those decks depict "powerful feudal lords", then we've done them a disservice. |

Comments: | I think there might be some merit to having some kind of second sense here, but I don't really have time to figure out exactly what it should be/properly attest for the usage right now. I do believe us editors have a responsiblity (in one sense - this is of course volunteer work) to look up even poorly sourced amendments/suggestions, but Nicolas, if you're going to "insist" on something being included, you'd make it a lot easier for everyone if you could include actual sourced examples (and several of them) instead of vaguely hand- waving with "there's plenty on Google". I'm not saying this as an admonishment, more as advice. |

Comments: | It doesn't make sense to me to say "so what if the English translation is a proverb though the Japanese term is really an idiomatic expression?" (paraphrasing Rene). It matters a lot. Users seeing a proverb gloss will assume the Japanese word is a proverb. Regarding starting glosses with "to" even if they don't conjugate... this should probably be discussed on the mailing list, but I'm vacationing right now and don't really have the time unfortunately. |
