5. | A 2019-11-06 00:17:39 Jim Breen <...address hidden...>
Comments: | I'm prepared to wave this through, but it is VERY marginal. 氛 is virtually unused in Japanese; I think it only got into the JIS 208 standard because it appeared in a place name. The only reference I can find for a word is the New Nelson, where John Haig says it can be used in ふんいき (雰囲気) instead of the usual 雰. Nicolas, looking for words that use really obscure kanji is a waste of time (yours and ours) which could better be spent identifying and entering more recent and useful words. I'm only accepting this because of the 日本国語大辞典 entry. Don't take it as an encouragement to pursue this approach. |
|
4. | A* 2019-11-03 09:23:13 Nicolas Maia
Comments: | I saw 氛 as a suggestion in my IME, noticed JMdict had no words using this kanji and looked it up on Kotobank. That's how I found these terms. |
|
3. | A* 2019-11-03 00:55:30 Robin Scott <...address hidden...>
Comments: | I'm not opposed in principle to adding archaic terms here, but if a word is so obscure that even the most comprehensive kokugo dictionaries ignore it, I think we need a higher threshold. There's no end to the number of obscure archaic words you can find by sifting through dictionaries and kanbun texts. The overwhelming majority of them will be of no use to anyone (probably never looked up once). However, stumbling across an old word while reading Japanese literature might be a good reason for adding it. I'd be interested to know how Nicolas found this one. Without JE dictionaries to refer to, it can be quite challenging (and time consuming) to come up with good, accurate translations for these words. It's probably not the best use of our time to be reviewing them unless there's a reason to believe they could be helpful. I don't want us to be a situation where we have a constant backlog of super obscure archaic words in the pending submissions queue. |
|
2. | A* 2019-11-03 00:28:05 Marcus Richert <...address hidden...>
Comments: | Maybe we need to decide if we maybe want to draw the line somewhere. For example, do we really need/want Old Japanese (上代日 本語) in jmdict? Since the nikk usage was from 796 this particular word would qualify as Early Middle Japanese (中古日本語, 794-1185), though. |

Comments: | resubmitting entry from Nicholas that was rejected. IMO, something being archaic/obscure is no reason for it to be rejected as long as there are solid kokugo references for it. that's why the [arch] tag exists (now added) |
