Comments: | this is not a duplicate. both are entry ID 1208920; however, it appears that because an anonymous editor revived a rejected fork and Jim approved on that branch instead of rejecting, this one entry now has two approved branches. (if you search for 株, two entries will show.) this should not be able to happen, so it appears to be a database error. i will raise this on the mailing list so it can be fixed i will try deleting the other forked branch; however, i suspect that it will delete the entire entry and it will need to be restored. if it was you who revived the rejected branch, please do not do so again. edit off of the approved branches that represent the current entries only. |

(株[Seq=1208920] has two approved Seq numbers: this one, ID=2051055, and another one, ID=1070337). i will raise it on the mailing list, but i'm seeing what happens if i delete this entry. will it delete both of the ID numbers or only one? |

Comments: | Noted [8-)}]. The "edict2" format used by WWWJDIC uses EUC-JP coding which supports the JIS X 0208 and 0212 character sets. The standard conversion from UTF-8 to EUC simply drops unsupported characters, but our routine does a few fiddles of the ㈱ -> (株) variety. sometimes with amusing results. |
|
19. | A* 2021-03-08 20:26:48 Robin Scott <...address hidden...> | |
Comments: | Just noting that ㈱ is rendered as "(株)" on WWWJDIC, so the note reads "written as (株) or (株)". |

Comments: | Missed that it doesn't always come after the company name, my bad. I think this use is very common, not sure if sense 2 might have been one position too high up but it's definitely not 8/8 in terms of percentage of usage. I think it was worthwhile to include the glyph ㈱ in the note because searching for it right now (on jisho for example) doesn't turn up anything. |

Comments: | I'm prepared to wave this through, but it is VERY marginal. 氛 is virtually unused in Japanese; I think it only got into the JIS 208 standard because it appeared in a place name. The only reference I can find for a word is the New Nelson, where John Haig says it can be used in ふんいき (雰囲気) instead of the usual 雰. Nicolas, looking for words that use really obscure kanji is a waste of time (yours and ours) which could better be spent identifying and entering more recent and useful words. I'm only accepting this because of the 日本国語大辞典 entry. Don't take it as an encouragement to pursue this approach. |

Comments: | I saw 氛 as a suggestion in my IME, noticed JMdict had no words using this kanji and looked it up on Kotobank. That's how I found these terms. |

Comments: | I'm not opposed in principle to adding archaic terms here, but if a word is so obscure that even the most comprehensive kokugo dictionaries ignore it, I think we need a higher threshold. There's no end to the number of obscure archaic words you can find by sifting through dictionaries and kanbun texts. The overwhelming majority of them will be of no use to anyone (probably never looked up once). However, stumbling across an old word while reading Japanese literature might be a good reason for adding it. I'd be interested to know how Nicolas found this one. Without JE dictionaries to refer to, it can be quite challenging (and time consuming) to come up with good, accurate translations for these words. It's probably not the best use of our time to be reviewing them unless there's a reason to believe they could be helpful. I don't want us to be a situation where we have a constant backlog of super obscure archaic words in the pending submissions queue. |

Comments: | Maybe we need to decide if we maybe want to draw the line somewhere. For example, do we really need/want Old Japanese (上代日 本語) in jmdict? Since the nikk usage was from 796 this particular word would qualify as Early Middle Japanese (中古日本語, 794-1185), though. |

Comments: | resubmitting entry from Nicholas that was rejected. IMO, something being archaic/obscure is no reason for it to be rejected as long as there are solid kokugo references for it. that's why the [arch] tag exists (now added) |

|
Comments: | Those glosses weren't right. The 悪気 in the nikk definition is あっき, not わるぎ. Kanjigen redirects to 妖気. This is part of the reason I feel we're wasting our time with entries like this. Writing glosses is not a trivial task. Our efforts are better spent on words that people are actually going to see. Like 氛氳, this probably doesn't exist outside of kanbun. |

Comments: | resubmitting another of Nicholas's rejected entries the reason i started working on edict in the first place was because i was translating some akutagawa & soseki stuff and i could not find a japanese-english dictionary that had some of the old words i was finding. i was using kokugos to make my own list of translated words and then i discovered that i could share them by submitting to edict IMO, the archaic stuff is exactly where edict excels over GG5. so i would prefer to allow in archaic words so long as they are backed up by solid kokugo references and marked as [arch] |
