Comments: | As in English, ウイング (and 翼) can have many applications & meanings. Either we try and spell them all out (and the Othello one would be well down the list), or we just leave it as "wing". I've extended it to see how it looks, but I'd be quite comfortable with just one sense. |

[Jay Rubin's translation] ---------------- (1) I think "responsiveness" and "responding" can be added for cases like the Murakami sentence. Here are some other examples: a) Adults cannot understand the music children respond to nowadays. [GG5] b) 感応度 (a degree of) sensitivity; responsiveness; responsivity; a response level. [新和英中辞典] (2) inspiration I don't think it's "inspiration" in the everyday sense of the word (as in "Helen had one of her flashes of inspiration" or "he is an inspiration to everyone"). GG5's definition says "〔霊感〕 inspiration", so I'd change "inspiration" to "divine inspiration". (3) "divine response" 〈神仏が〉 hear 《our prayer》. [GG5] c) 感応コイル 【電】 an induction coil. [GG5] |

Comments: | You're correct. I note that the JE dictionaries favour transitive glosses (in the active voice), probably because the passive voice can sound awkward and is less helpful for translations. e.g. "このびんには2リットル入る" is better translated as "This bottle holds two litres" than as "Two litres can be held in this bottle". But I support the change. I've amended the "obtain" sense as well. Added some more senses. I don't think we need a separate sense for "break into". I'll reindex the sentences if this is approved. |

Comments: | From what I understand, sense 4 seems "backwards" - the most common definitions of "contain", "hold", and "accommodate" are transitive, but "入る" is listed as intransitive. The examples I have seen other dictionaries use to explain this sense all seem to point to a passive definition, where the subject is the item being "contained". I suspect sense 7 has the same issue, but I couldn't find examples online in English and my Japanese is poor. The travel expenses also include the meal plan for both morning and evening. What is in this food? The service charge is not included in the fee. |
