that affixes to a -人 noun. It's not normal -さん behavior, it's not what you'd expect if you 
weren't already familiar with this one expression.

Rather more common than 面子を失う. 
Derivation of the meaning unclear. GG5 has "人の顔を立てる make sb look good; preserve appearances for sb; present [put] sb in a good light". whereas "to save face" usually means one's own.
BTW, the Weblio "reference" was quite irrelevant.
