I don't think it's playing it safe to keep
a form that's not used. Instead we risk
passing on incorrect information - "oh, it
can be written this way too!"
Unless somebody can dig up any usage
examples, I think it should go.

  Comments:
Personally, I don't think it's necessary to keep "shelved"/"stifled". It's not a separate meaning. "To see the light of day" and "to be realized" work perfectly well for negative sentences (see examples above).
6. D* 2019-10-18 02:23:54  Jim Breen <...address hidden...>
  Comments:
I'm keen to see the shelved/stifled meaning of the negative form retained somewhere. How about a second sense for the 日の目を見る entry along the lines of:
  <<in the negative>>
to be shelved; to be stifled; to remain obscure
Then this entry could comfortable be dispatched.
5. D* 2019-10-17 14:49:28  Marcus Richert <...address hidden...>
  Comments:
I agree with Robin. The entry is messy too, with verb glosses mixed in with the adjective glosses.

  Comments:
but this is a j-e dictionary, and figuring out "what extremely common word" + "san" means should not be particularly challenging given the entries for 外人 and さん, and the gloss here is in fact copied from 外人, so it's hard to see what the entry really adds. without checking, i'd say some of those other さん entries might be able to go as well

strongest argument for keeping this is that it's a politer alternative to 外人 which can sometimes be considered derogatory
8. D* 2019-10-17 00:49:17
  Comments:
For reference, these are some "work title"+さん entries already in jmdict:
お医者さん
お坊さん
坊さん
大家さん
お手伝いさん
按摩さん
お相撲さん
7. D* 2019-10-17 00:40:55
  Comments:
I won't belabor the point if people don't think it's necessary, but the reason I think it's worth
including is because on the one hand, attaching -さん onto various things like job titles is very
common (e.g. 店員さん、駅員さん、おまわりさん, etc.), but this is the _only_ common -さん construct
that affixes to a -人 noun. It's not normal -さん behavior, it's not what you'd expect if you
weren't already familiar with this one expression.
6. D 2019-10-16 18:46:47  Jim Breen <...address hidden...>
  Comments:
I think I agree. With the さん there's a different nuance, but then there always is.

Rather more common than 面子を失う.
Derivation of the meaning unclear. GG5 has "人の顔を立てる make sb look good; preserve appearances for sb; present [put] sb in a good light". whereas "to save face" usually means one's own.
BTW, the Weblio "reference" was quite irrelevant.
