Comments: | Maybe the "contempt" bit is slightly more loaded than it has to be but I'm not really sure the New York Times article is on the ball here. Based on the kokugo's/wa-ei definitions, I have a hard time understanding how something like "黙殺します" could be interpreted to mean "No comment. We need more time." Googling a little for 鈴木貫太郎 黙殺 it seems that the issue might really have been a poor choice of words on behalf of Suzuki (or the media describing the government's position?) rather than an actual bonafide mistranslation. The whole story has the feels of an urban legend (though I could be wrong). _ Looking at the examples in GG5 and prog especially, I don't see much of an issue with "shunning", if it's towards the end of the entry. |

Comments: | I'm just not sure secret industry code words are worth including in a dictionary unless they're very well known or have entered common usage. The site above lists the following code words for cockroach: みのさん、しげるくん、太郎、花子、テラフォーマーズ、ぴかちゅう、五木、黒い隣人. If we're keeping 太郎さん, I see no reason not to add the others as well. (But I'd much rather we had none of them). |

Comments: | I think it should stay. Paul Blay's original URL ref. has expired, but it contained "あと店にもよるのかもしれないけど、ゴキブリのことは「花子さん」と呼んでました。" Searching for combinations of 太郎さん and ゴキブリ brings up similar information, e.g. the site above . which says, among other thinsg, "実はこれ、主人から聞いたことがあります。本当に使っているようですよ『太郎さん』という隠語。これはゴキブリを指す言葉で、お客さんを不快にさせないようにするためなんです。そりゃそうですよね。" |

Comments: | Suggest [stat1], well worth learning anyway. I failed to recognize this term when getting a corona booster shot today in Shinjuku. Ended up saying something embarrassing (so my judgement here is biased, if you have a better source for current statistics). It was part of the quick Q&A with a nurse before you get the shot. Objectively perhaps 1/3rd to 1/2 as common overall in current media vs. 副作用 as far as I can see. Coronavirus vaccines seems to have wildly increased the commonness of this term since the ngram days(both in direct application and anti-vax movements). I imagine that contributed to the gloss improvements in 2021/2022. |
