Refs: | Saw this discussed in Jim's reddit post: https://www.reddit.com/r/LearnJapanese/comments/b04h8e/usually_kana_tags_in_wwwjdic_jisho_etc/ person 1: "nothing is "always kanji", and anything that's truly "always kana" wouldn't even have any kanji forms listed...so both of those tags would be completely pointless." person 2: "You mean like する? 100% Kana all the time, most IMEs won't even convert this." So I checked my Windows 10 standard IME and found that it indeed would not even show 為る for する, nor does my android google keyboard. That essentially makes 為る archaic, doesn't it? (alternatively, if we implement the suggested rareKanji, this would perhaps be candidate for that) |

Hard to tell how common it is but 5,560 hits for 甲乙双方, 18,600 for 甲乙間." Googling for 甲乙双方 brings up a lot of legal stuff. I suspect it's probably overdoing it to say it's a legal term per se. Comments: | Sense 3 is tricky. I'm ambigious towards having notes like "used in the negative" while glossing the sense as if the entry is in fact for the negated form. Isn't it a little confusing? The entry is 問う, not 問わない/問わず so I'd kind of expect the gloss to be "with regard to". Also, is sense 3 all that different from sense 4? Would it make sense to remove sense 3 and add something to the sense 3 note? "; also negated as 問わず to mean "without regard to"" |

Comments: | I think I agree with Rene's 5 year old view that this entry isn't needed - this is already covered by the なる entry. I'm not really convinced it's helpful to beginners, either. If they need this type of guidance, I'd much prefer to have a note on sense 1 in the な る entry reading something like "usu. as ...になる". With all entries like this one, the risk is also we lead beginners into thinking the verb is "になる" rather than "なる" (sure, the entry is marked "exp", but if this entry is to help beginners who don't even know the meaning of に, do you expect them to be aware of the finer points of our PoS tagging system?). If we choose to keep it though, I can't really see why "becomes" etc. would be better than "to become"? They're essentially the same but the infinitive form is how we usually gloss senses with a verb PoS. |

{sports}
▶ group of death ▶ [expl] tournament group containing many strong teams |
7. | A 2018-06-17 14:44:54 Robin Scott <...address hidden...>
Comments: | The difference is that 死の組/"group of death" is not technical sports lingo. It appears in news articles aimed at the general public, but is not quite ubiquitous enough to be understood by everyone, especially without context. |
|
6. | A* 2018-06-17 03:25:02 Marcus Richert <...address hidden...>
Comments: | I'm perfectly OK with leaving something like the expl in, I just think it's a little unnecessary. I'd be surprised if I really understood even 1/10th of the translations for the [baseb]-tagged entries but I don't know that it's necessary to provide lengthy explanations to each one of them because of that. If you're interested enough in sports to read a text where an expression like "死の組" is actually used, you'll probably understand what it means, is my thinking. But if you prefer to keep it in, that's OK with me. |
