Comments: | See the discussion on 2840979. I suspect the best solution will be to split the たまう and たもう versions of this and related entries into separate entries with their distinct pos tags. |

9. | A* 2019-12-01 13:27:39 Dine2019 <...address hidden...>
Comments: | Should we mark the たもう reading as not having a stem/ending boundary or conjugating? If we don't do so, some users or client software might pronounce it as タモウ or conjugate it as たもいます / たもえ. As far as I know, only some words have the cross-boundary reading giving rise to a new combination of stem + ending: 【言う】いう→ゆう→ゆった 【酔う】えう→よう→よった According to this link, 給う isn't such a word: https://oshiete.goo.ne.jp/qa/1844024.html |

Comments: | Sense 3 is tricky. I'm ambigious towards having notes like "used in the negative" while glossing the sense as if the entry is in fact for the negated form. Isn't it a little confusing? The entry is 問う, not 問わない/問わず so I'd kind of expect the gloss to be "with regard to". Also, is sense 3 all that different from sense 4? Would it make sense to remove sense 3 and add something to the sense 3 note? "; also negated as 問わず to mean "without regard to"" |

Comments: | "dick" is originally a euphemism too - "Ultimately from Dick, pet form of the name Richard. The name Dick came to mean "everyman", whence the word acquired its other meanings." Comments: | I've noticed that ナニ (always in katakana) is frequently used in Japanese subtitles of English-language movies/TV shows with the meaning "penis". I asked a native speaker if this is really an established expression (when I first saw it) and they commented it's at least commonly used like this in subtitles. It's really a subsense of sense 2 but it seems common enough to get its own sense. "masturbation"/"to have sex" don't seem quite as common (and I haven't encountered the word used like that in the wild/in Jp subtitles either) I considered creating a separate kana-only entry for ナニ but it can be and is of course used with other senses of 何 too and I wouldn't want to direct users looking up the more innocuous use to the wrong entry. |

Those sentences won't be picked up by 成る/なる, but there are already another 1535 sentences indexed to it. (b) reindex those 3k sentences. Not a trivial task. (c) reinstate this entry. I'm not sure anyone really wants that. |

Comments: | I think I agree with Rene's 5 year old view that this entry isn't needed - this is already covered by the なる entry. I'm not really convinced it's helpful to beginners, either. If they need this type of guidance, I'd much prefer to have a note on sense 1 in the な る entry reading something like "usu. as ...になる". With all entries like this one, the risk is also we lead beginners into thinking the verb is "になる" rather than "なる" (sure, the entry is marked "exp", but if this entry is to help beginners who don't even know the meaning of に, do you expect them to be aware of the finer points of our PoS tagging system?). If we choose to keep it though, I can't really see why "becomes" etc. would be better than "to become"? They're essentially the same but the infinitive form is how we usually gloss senses with a verb PoS. |

I can see と見られる in heaps of places, including in Eijiro sentences, GG5 examples, Tanaka sentences, etc. I think it is better to leave the と見られる entry pretty much as it was, probably changing it "often preceded by a verb", and add a new entry for 見られる alone. |

Comments: | When "adj-f" first emerged and got described as "noun or verb acting prenominally" I think I had in mind that the verb would either not be conjugating or was conjugated already, as in 得も言われぬ or ああいった. Then along comes 信用できる/信用できない and mucks things up. I'm very tempted to say that if a verb is usually prenominal, don't have a v1/v5x tag. I think that should work, and 信用できない can fend for itself. Of course 食べる doesn't get an "adj-f". So, I guess I'm back to Marcus' earlier position, and drop the verb tag for these cases. |
|
11. | A* 2018-06-25 20:01:42 Rene Malenfant <...address hidden...>
Comments: | seems like the adj-f is unneeded. e.g., 食べるもの means 'things to eat', but we don't mark 食べる or any other verb as adj-f. i suggest adj-f not be used anywhere that it's tagged as a verb |

Comments: | I agree that "for" shouldn't be mandated in every single [exp, verb] entry, but I do like it in general because I'm really a big fan of consistency. Was the particular usage here really "clumsy"? To me, "for the skies to open up" looks natural and better than "the skies open up". I think I'm fine with mixing inf/non-inf glosses, on the other hand. |

Comments: | For expressions of the form A が B-verb I don't thing there's any to make it an infinitive verb form. I don't think the "for .." approach should be mandated; sometimes it's rather clumsy. Whatever works, makes sense, etc. can be used. |

Comments: | How should we format glosses for expressions like this (that have a subject)? I'm not a fan of starting a gloss with "for ..." when it's impractical/impossible to use the infinitive marker. Is this better? And is it OK to mix infinitive glosses with non-infinitive glosses? |
