Comments: | [adj-no] is at least better than [n] I've never really understood what [adj-f] is, but many of our [adj-f] entries seem to be prefixes in compound nouns rather than adjectives |

5. | A* 2019-07-23 10:03:40 Marcus Richert <...address hidden...> | |
Comments: | I think the usage in things like 自動ドア is just a noun in a compound noun, not adjectival. But even if we decide it's adjectival, 自動 is also commonly used as an adj-no (which I count as "noun" use)... which means normally we'd tag it as adj-no, not adj-f (because that's implied by adj-no). I think [adj-no,n] would be better than [adj-f] (I see our 半自動 entry is [n,adj-f] "semi-automatic", while 全自動 is [adj-no] "totally automatic") |

Comments: | Thanks for the clarification. I was going to argue these senses shouldn't be included because it's a conjugation for only a limited set of verb classes (一段 and する/くる?) and we don't have similar entries for -そう, -とう, etc. which should be equally valid... but I realized these senses are actually included in daijs' and daijr's よう entries and we do actually have an entry for "た" ("indicates past tense") in JMDict as well. _ My preference would still be to follow GG5's example to not include these senses and also not have an entry for た, but I guess that'd be a topic for the mailing list instead of the comment section of this one entry. _ In the meanwhile, I've tried improve the 3 senses because I don't think the definitions/notes were very clear. I've moved the previous glosses into usage notes and added actual glosses. To what extent the glosses are helpful, I'm not sure, but until the separate issue of glossless senses are resolved, maybe this will do. I also moved the previous sense 1 to sense 3 as I think it's the least common aux-v usage (if that's indeed the correct PoS). _ "verb stem" - is this the right term? I forget |

Comments: | This may be an ephemeral term, and fade from use in a year or so. Most dictionaries try and avoid ephemera. OTOH an electronic dictionary is less troubled in this area. The marginal publishing cost for an entry is virtually zero, and while "clutter" can still occur, it's less of a problem. If I encountered 51%攻撃 I'd have to dig a bit to find out what it meant. I rather like having access to an immediate entry. |

Comments: | What I meant by the first half of my comment is that this term is perhaps too specialised. We have a lot of technical terms in jmdict but they typically come from well-established fields/areas of study. Of the many cryptocurrency terms that exist (see link above), only a few are worth adding to a general-purpose dictionary. I'd argue this isn't one of them. |
