Comments: | DIJG says that when the preceding verb is transitive, っぱなし "means that someone does something to X and leaves X as it is without putting it back to its original state, which is not the proper way." When the preceding verb is transitive, っぱなし "means that something or something keeps doing something." Prog and wisdom split along these lines. Dropping spec1 from the kanji form. |

Comments: | A bit more info. It is from https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/カトリーヌ・ド・メディシス カトリーヌはマルグリットを彼女の意思から切り離し、二度と会うことはなかった。 This appears to be a translation of the English "Catherine cut Margaret out of her will and never saw her again" (at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catherine_de'_Medici). However, I guess it may be a mistranslation (translator not understanding the sense in which "will" is meant). |
|
5. | A 2018-06-04 04:32:48 Jim Breen <...address hidden...>
Comments: | I think it's incorrect to use for a testamentary will. |
|
4. | A* 2018-06-04 02:56:12 Marcus Richert <...address hidden...>
Comments: | Are you sure it wasn't 遺志? Daijisen and Daijirin have a second sense in their 意思 entries but it concerns "intent/intention" as a legal term, e.g. criminal intent. |
|
3. | A* 2018-06-04 02:37:59
Comments: | I've seen this used as a translation of English "will" in the sense of a document stating what one wants to happen to one's possessions after one's death. This sense is missing here (or not explicit), but I'm not certain it's a correct translation. |

Daijirin:下級裁判所の決定・命令を不服として、上級裁判所に不服を申し立てること。 gg5: (法) a protest; a complaint; an appeal |
|
Comments: | I suggest there is no need to include the romaji "kokoku" in the Meaning. In my opinion "appeal" is a valid translation because, although procedural details may differ, the underlying concept is common to different jurisdictions. "Interlocutory" is a particular type of appeal so should be in a separate entry. When the issue about deleting the romaji (kokoku) is settled I will submit revisions for 準抗告、特別抗告 and 即時抗告 which have the same issue. I will also have a go at separating entries for "urgent" and "interlocutory", that is if it can be done without calling for a lawyer. Also can take the opportunity to update the cross-referencing. |

Comments: | While 近いうちに or そのうちに both have similar meanings, they don't suffice in this situation, which specifically refers to the very near future. It carries a different nuance than すぐ or 今すぐ and is useful in conversation when you're talking about your plans or expectations of the near future. 今私は本を読んでるが、もうちょっとしたら出かけようと思う。I'm reading a book right now, but I think I'm going to head out soon. |

Comments: | Thanks for the clarification. I was going to argue these senses shouldn't be included because it's a conjugation for only a limited set of verb classes (一段 and する/くる?) and we don't have similar entries for -そう, -とう, etc. which should be equally valid... but I realized these senses are actually included in daijs' and daijr's よう entries and we do actually have an entry for "た" ("indicates past tense") in JMDict as well. _ My preference would still be to follow GG5's example to not include these senses and also not have an entry for た, but I guess that'd be a topic for the mailing list instead of the comment section of this one entry. _ In the meanwhile, I've tried improve the 3 senses because I don't think the definitions/notes were very clear. I've moved the previous glosses into usage notes and added actual glosses. To what extent the glosses are helpful, I'm not sure, but until the separate issue of glossless senses are resolved, maybe this will do. I also moved the previous sense 1 to sense 3 as I think it's the least common aux-v usage (if that's indeed the correct PoS). _ "verb stem" - is this the right term? I forget |

Comments: | For people (and esp. beginners) using tools like rikai-kun etc., I think it's convenient to be able to pick this up in one sweep and immediately provide an idiomatic translation instead of forcing them to puzzle out what the constituent parts mean on their own, and it's useful for reverse look-ups and possibly Japanese users looking for how to say 外で飼う in English (it probably won't take long before a google search for 外で飼う 英語 brings up the weblio page including this definition as the first result). Also in general if it really is an idiomatic expression (and in another source; even if it's eij), I think entries like these are basically harmless to include - there are no obvious downsides and you never know in what ways it might be useful (machine translation?) |

Comments: | The "10 times" is taken from examining the two terms in the Kyoto/Melbourne n-gram corpus (http://nlp.cis.unimelb.edu.au/jwb/ngramcountswww.html) and the much larger Google Japanese n-gram corpus (https://catalog.ldc.upenn.edu/LDC2009T08). The counts are above. I realise I should have also checked the conjugated forms of 思う (added above). They confirm that the extended form is indeed the most common usage of 憎からず. |

Comments: | I do not know where you get "10 times more common" from, but it cannot be right. This word is followed by 思う almost all the time, just like 打ち所 is followed by 悪い. The example on 大辞林 is 互いに憎からず思っている. The example on 大辞泉 is 憎からず思う. The example on nihonjiten.com is 憎からず思う. I viewed 100 Google results for "憎からず" and found 63 憎からず思う 7 憎からず想う 1 憎からず感じる 21 dictionary sites (varying quality): at least 4 had 思う I have added a translation which is perhaps better than what I originally provided. |
