Comments: | I think I misunderstood Jim's question "Is it really an adverb?". You were asking about the second sense, right? ------------------ In Japanese the PoS of a compound XY is determined by Y. Thus every suffix -Y really has a PoS, which is the same as the PoS of XY. Our way of handling this is not perfect. If XY is a verb, then we tag -Y as [aux-v]. If XY is a an i-adjective, then we tag -Y as [aux-adj]. But if XY is a noun or adverb or something else, then I think we simply tag -Y as as [suf]. |

Comments: | How on Earth, did the notion of company president get in there? The English word "president" is veeeery broad and vague, but the Japanese terms that are used for its various meanings, very much are not. Especially 大統領. It refers exclusively to a country's president …except for in the second, figurative and tongue-in-cheek, sense, where someone is metaphorically (and very much hyperbolically) referred to, as being as big and important as the president of a country. |

And we don't typically include an x-ref to an abbreviated form unless it's more common than the full form. I don't think that's the case here. |

Comments: | Oops, I neglected to check the history. I suppose the sense cross-references serve two different purposes: one explains the etymology and the other explains that it may be abbreviated. I didn't think the former would be necessary since "notebook computer" is common in English as well, and probably nobody would think "note" refers to musical notes. But I may just be biased. |
