I moved "makes words more polite" to the note, where I think it belongs, while I guess I entered "politeness marker" as a temporary
stopgap ready to be deleted if we should begin to allow glossless entries. It's kind of pointless having both though, of course.

seeing as we can't, isn't "makes words more polite" a clearer gloss than "politeness marker"?

  Comments:
I actually think many of the sentences correspond to (current) sense 2 (for a short while; for a moment; etc.), which is sense 1 in daijr.
It's not a particularly short period of time, so "for an instant" probably isn't appropriate.

The other sense was meant to refer to much longer periods of time as in sentences like "しばらく雨が降っていない. It hasn't rained for some time."

Not sure if this is the right way to revise this to add the archaic "てふてふ" spelling. Doesn't appear to be in modern dictionaries (probably due to archaic orthography). Encountered this as an apparently archaic or poetic form with the same meaning and read the as the modern word.

These two unrelated lines are from a game set in a fantasy world.
They are referring to two races who are living in separate areas of the country, but sometimes mingle too.

https://www.plansponsor.com/tuesday-trivia-phrase-grasping-straws-come/?layout=print#:~:text=It comes from a proverb,the side of a river.
It comes from a proverb in Thomas More’s “Dialogue of Comfort Against Tribulation” (1534) which says, “A drowning man will clutch at straws.” It is said that the “straw” in this case refers to the sort of thin reeds that grow by the side of a river.
  Comments:
It was odd to see such a long-form idiom with kanji ranked at the bottom. Full kanji form is prevalent on twitter, supported by n-grams.

Seems like a bit of a fools errand to catalogue all combinations of
溺れ・おぼれ
もの・者
藁・わら・ワラ
掴む・つかむ
(24 combinations, all probably in use somewhere). Likewise, I don't know about displaying any particular alternate surface form. *In particular*, for learners をも掴む would suffer by being written in kana, since をも is so unusual, and the "verb" would probably be guessed as もつかむ. (I had this problem myself, even with the kanji... I tried to figure out why もつかむ wasn't in the dictionary anywhere). I added some [sK] forms that are more popular than the ones here, and I mostly just pulled them out of a hat. There are surely even more.

Japanese also has the old form(をも掴む) /modern-form (にも縋る) dichotomy, so I felt ok replacing the English gloss with what appears to be the most common structure. (clutch).

I didn't associate the English gloss with "grasping at straws", I had no idea this was an English idiom, or that it was the source of "grasping at straws".
I thought this was a piece of ancient East-Asian wisdom. Couldn't find a Japanese etymology, I think it's suspected to be a calque from English, but unknown.

In place of a [lit] gloss, I think the xref helps clears up a lot.

I've been thinking about this entry for a while and my feeling is that it should probably go.
It's not really an expression but a grammar point. ようが is just one example of the volitional form.
I know there are sentences linked to it but I think this is better explained by a grammar dictionary. I note we don't have ようと, which is used in exactly the same way.

英文	Give him an inch and he’ll take a mile.

(直訳:彼に少しでも与えたら善意に付け込まれるよ)
  Comments:
Alternate suggestion, single gloss only:

give someone an inch and they'll take a mile

========= Long winded reasoning
Before adding a new entry for a variant of this Japanese idiom, I'd like to add to the discussion on the current glosses, and see if something different might be considered.

Google N-gram Corpus Counts
庇を貸して母屋	1530
軒を貸して母屋	908 NEW

Adding to Stephen's comment, I have also have never heard the "ell" formation (though it's fair to say I'm not well versed in literature). Kids these days I guess... (I'm 42). I also immediately though "wouldn't mile be better than yard?" Obviously all of these formulations, and a number of variants (give 'em an inch, give them an inch, give someone an inch) are all in circulation(with "ell" appearing to be the origin)

Currently, Cambridge Dictionary online has a single, modern / gender-neutral formulation:

- give someone an inch and they'll take a mile

No mention of yards or ells. If it were me, I would just use this gloss alone. I think it's likely to be readily understood by native English speakers, and safe to use for Japanese learners who acquire it via jmdict (I would not necessarily say the same of the "inch/ell" formulation).

=====

Just looking at cute quotations and comic images, if you do a google image search for just the quoted prefix, you get the following rough counts for "miles", "yards", "foot", "ells", and "furlongs"(hah)... As you move toward gender neutrality (~modern usage), miles seems to gain in popularity.

"give someone an inch" 17 miles, 1 yard, 0 ells
"give them an inch" 12 miles, 2 yards, 0 ells
"give em an inch". 6 miles, 2 x "foot", 1 furlong, 0 ells
"give him an inch" 3 miles, 5 yards, 2 ells (there were a bunch of additional t-shirts with the "yard" expression)

Also anecdotally, a twitter search for "give someone an inch" seems to be entirely "miles" (though other formulations sometimes yield different results)

"About half a decade ago, psychiatrist and author Shizuo Machizawa proclaimed discovery of the "lunchmate syndrome," used
to describe the stress felt by school newcomers who, finding it so troublesome or stressful to make new friends with whom
they could sit together for lunch in the dining hall or cafeteria began taking their meals in toilet cubicles."
  Comments:
"lunchmate syndrome" isn't really used in English of course except as a translation of the Japanese "phenomenon"
