Comments: | Marcus's comment from a fork: "Without the "of" it seems the verb is transitive, that the secret is the object rather than the subject. I think an overly elliptical style often makes entries harder to understand." I agree with Marcus. Our usual style (at least for the past few years) has been to include "of" for intransitive verbs/expressions. Sometimes it makes no real difference (as in "to be exposed") but often it does (as in "to leak out"), so for consistency's sake I think "of" should always been included. |

Comments: | Given the deliberately elliptical style that is common in dictionary entries, I don't think the addition of "of a", etc. is much help. "to be exposed (lie, improper behaviour, etc.)" and "to be exposed (of a lie, improper behaviour, etc.)" really mean the same thing. I'd always go for the shorter form. |

Comments: | It doesn't refer to the principle/policy itself. In all the examples in the refs, it comes straight after a noun. I don't think 一本やり itself is adjectival. I don't think the third sense is needed. It's only in daijs and it's not how you'd say "one/single spear" in modern Japanese. The other kokugos have "槍一突きで勝負をきめること" but it's archaic. |

Comments: | I don't like splitting adj-na/n here because it's very inconsistent with how we usually format our entries. If we decided to always split out the various PoS (like GG5 does) that'd be one thing, but as we haven't, I don't really see how this is a special case that warrants splitting. On glossing a single sense like an adj-na or n, I don't have a strong opinion but I don't have an issue with basing it on the most common usage. I do feel this is something that needs to be properly formalize in our editing guidelines though, instead of relying on editors being aware of "what we usually do in these cases." |

Refs: | https://www.boj.or.jp/en/about/press/koen_2019/ko190306a.htm Improvements in Employment of Women and the Elderly [paragraph on women] Moreover, Chart 2 also shows that employment of the elderly has been growing. However, in the case of the elderly, the share of non-regular employees has been rising. The reason is likely that many are hired as temporary or part-time workers after reaching retirement age. Because Japan's population is aging, this means that it is unlikely that the share of non-regular employees in employment as a whole will decrease. However, looking at employees between 15 and 64 years of age, the share of non-regular employees has been declining since around 2014. また、同じ図2に見るように、高齢者の雇用も伸びています。ただし、高齢者の場合は、非正規の割合が上昇しています。これは定年退職後、嘱託や非常勤として雇われる高齢者が多いからだと思われます。日本は高齢化が進んでいる訳ですから、このことは、雇用全体として非正規の割合が低下することが難しいということを意味します。しかし、15-64歳までの雇用者を見れば、2014年頃から、非正規の割合が低下しています。 |
|
Comments: | Small note of little importance, the previous translation coincidentally ran into my 嘱託(社員) edit. The workers were probably "RE-hired after reaching (mandatory) retirement age". And I found the original source. https://www.boj.or.jp/en/about/press/koen_2019/ko190306a.htm I was going to suggest that context probably made things clear. Instead, it looks like this is an official Japanese translation of a Japanese source document that dropped some (perhaps non-critical) nuances. |

Comments: | Add [vs,vi] If it were me, I wouldn't have added the GG5 gloss of "reaching retirement age". It definitely works in some contexts, but this term doesn't mean "turned 65". It means "turned 65 and had to retire". In English, I feel like even after saying "After reaching retirement age...", you would *still* have to add "...she left the company (...and started a small business)". Take this reverso translation: これは定年退職後、嘱託や非常勤として雇われる高齢者が多いからだと思われます。 "The reason is likely that many are hired as temporary or part-time workers after reaching retirement age." I feel like the translator lost a step. I think "after mandatory retirement" would have been clearer. Also, you can "reach retirement age" without being employed. You definitely need a job to 定年退職. (One more reason why the previous translation ends up ambiguous). |

(ウンシャン from "unschön" is an example - it was a Meiji-to-early-Showa term)" Maybe this should be discussed again on the mailing list. |

I tried something like "to be balanced out" but it's not really it either. I'm fine if you want to reinstate the original though, I guess. |

Comments: | I get around 12 hits on twitter the past 24 hours right now, not counting duplicates (e.g. people sharing the same article) and obvious bots. It's true there's only 180 unique googits but for 工作員 itself I also only get 154 googits, and that's in both daijs and daijr. I also get 378 unique googits for "ネット工作員" site:http://2ch.sc That's despite the fact that 2ch's threads are continuously deleted when they are a couple of days (or so?) old. (and I get only 372 unique googits for "工作員" site:http://2ch.sc ) _ the glosses could maybe be revised but I think it's probably worth including. |
