お前 [ichi1] 御前 [rK]
おまえ [ichi1,news1,nf22] おまい
1. [pn] [fam,male]
《formerly honorific, now very informal》
▶ you
Cross references:
  ⇐ see: 2848635 おめー 1. you
  ⇐ see: 2835611 おま 1. you
  ⇐ see: 2831677 お前ら【おまえら】 1. you (plural)
2. (おまえ only) [n]
▶ before (a god, nobleman, etc.)
▶ in front of
Cross references:
  ⇐ see: 1625330 御前【ごぜん】 1. presence (of a nobleman, the emperor, etc.)

History:
12. A 2023-10-02 13:23:56  Jim Breen <...address hidden...>
11. A* 2023-10-01 23:21:33  Robin Scott <...address hidden...>
  Refs:
daij, koj
  Comments:
When used between peers, it usually isn't derogatory. I don't think we can concisely explain the nuances of お前 in a usage note. Depending on who you're speaking to, it can either be rude, condescending or just informal.
Sense 2 is a noun, not a pronoun.
I think 御前 should be visible. The kanji is shared with ごぜん and it might cause confusion if 御前 is used with this this meaning but only appears on the ごぜん entry.

I'd never heard the term until my first trip to Japan in 1981, and Japanese business people I spoke to started using it and were surprised to learn it was a local construction (unless you read Orwell.)

I think there might be some merit to
having some kind of second sense here, but
I don't really have time to figure out
exactly what it should be/properly attest
for the usage right now.

I do believe us editors have a
responsiblity (in one sense - this is of
course volunteer work) to look up even
poorly sourced amendments/suggestions, but
Nicolas, if you're going to "insist" on
something being included, you'd make it a
lot easier for everyone if you could
include actual sourced examples (and
several of them) instead of vaguely hand-
waving with "there's plenty on Google".
I'm not saying this as an admonishment,
more as advice.

  Comments:
I'm not sure it's really a proverb (like some of the sources say) or simply just a ダジャレ.
I initially read this as:
"back off Budda, go away gods"
but a native informant thought the other reading was more likely. I wouldn't be surprised if it were used in both
ways.

2. A* 2018-05-02 05:21:06  Jim Breen <...address hidden...>
  Comments:
I see we need to do something about 〜 and ~, which most fonts have looking identical.
〜 (this one) comes from the JIS 全角 special characters, and Unicode has it in the CJK block with a code of U301C, and the name "wave dash". My IME produces it when I type にょろ.
~ (entry 2415870) is from the special Unicode block of double-width characters where it has the code FF5E and the name "Fullwidth Tilde". Originally it had the "other" 〜, but I think I deleted the wrong one in 2015.
FWIW several references give 波ダッシュ as the Japanese gloss of "tilde".
While it might be good to have a single entry for the lot, I think perhaps there should be two:
- one for 波ダッシュ/なみダッシュ/tilde/wave dash/
- one for 〜 and ~ with the reading of にょろ and the gloss of tilde/wave dash.
- and our ティルデ entry too.
