Comments: | Add more glosses – “taken”, “drawn” express a similar metaphor in English. (Also, regularized the parens on the prepositions – not sure on proper form, but these should be consistent, right?) BTW, I saw today as 魅かれる (song lyrics) – it’s definitely irregular [iK], but definitely used (and understandable – 魅力 etc.) |

Comments: | The kanji 引 has the readings ひ.く, ひ.き, ひ.き-, -び.き, ひ.ける I propose ひ.く, ひ.ける or ひ.く, ひ.ける, ひき instead. -- There is no need for ひ.き. The word 引き is just the masu-stem of 引く, not a noun in its own right. (Unlike say 匂: にお.う, にお.い) Obviously no need for ひ.き-. No need for -び.き ether. We normally don't include rendaku as separate readings. ---- One could make a case for ひき (as in 取引) as a separate reading. On the other hand, it is quite common to omit okurigana on masu-stems in compound words. I'd be happy to go either way here. |

Comments: | I agree. As 曳く, 牽く and 抽く are rare, I don't think it's worth splitting them out either. |
|
16. | A* 2023-12-10 02:58:40 Jim Breen <...address hidden...> | |
Comments: | The 引く/ひく extended family is always a bit of a problem as no two references agree on either the range of possible surface forms or the division of the senses. 明鏡 has just 引く, Nikkoku has 9 possible forms, and others are somewhere in between. GG5 has a solo 引く entry (11 senses) and a 引く/退く entry with 4 senses. We separate 退く, 惹く and 弾く into their own entries with mutual xrefs. I find this proposed amendment by アノンさん a bit messy, with its restrictions on all 19 senses. I'm not convinced the restrictions are really needed but I think a better solution would be to move 曳く, 牽く and 抽く to their own entries with mutual xrefs (as with the other 3 forms) and cut back the restrictions. |

Comments: | Request to add "fall back" / "retreat" Just saw やり合う時間はねえぜ。ひくぞ translated as "we don't have time to fight. let's retreat" before jumping out of a window in a 2-on-2 confrontation. Either this sense is independent of [17], or it would seem that "retreat"/"fall back" should be added to it, and possibly to the matching standalone entry for 退く. Note the Japanese kenkyuusha ref specifically identifies the sense as 後退する, for which we already have: 後退: retreat; falling back; moving backwards; reversing; backing up (of a vehicle); retrogression; retraction None of "let's draw back" "let's recede" or "let's move back" could have functioned in this context, the last of those being almost-but-not-quite there. |

Comments: | * Merge alt kanji from 1182840 牡蛎;硴 * Add カキ – this is often written as kana, but online looks like kanji is used * 牡蠣 is more official (dicts generally give this) and more common online; 蛎 is a simplification, seen a bit informally. (Just saw as 牡蠣 today – previously seen 牡蛎, then realized 萬 > 万 simplification.) |

Comments: | The example sentences in this entry are not properly matched up with the different meanings they are meant to illustrate. They should be rearranged as follows: 1. to come true (wish)esp. 叶う • もし病気の人が千羽の鶴を折ると、その人の願いが叶うの。If a sick person folds one thousand paper cranes, her wish will come true. 2. to be suited Usually written using kana alone, See also 道理に適う • 彼は我々の心にかなう人物だ。He is a man after our own hearts. 3. to match (implies competition); to rival; to bear (e.g. I can't bear the heat)esp. 敵う • バレエ音楽の指揮者として彼にかなうものはいない。He stands alone as a conductor of ballet music. In addition, I would suggest adding a comment that かなう in the third meaning above (敵う: to be a match for) is usually used in a NEGATIVE sentence construction, as in the example you provide, whose accurate but free translation, however, happens to mask the negative construction: "He stands alone as . . . ," i.e., "There is no one who can rival him as . . . ." |

Comments: | That restriction means that only 訊く is used for sense 3, which isn't correct. The only way to indicate that 訊く only applies to sense 3 is to add restrictions to all the other senses. A cleaner solution (and what I propose) is to split 訊く out into its own entry which points here. Most of the refs don't include it as a headword, only as a "「訊く」とも書く" note. --- I've added a couple of senses. |

Comments: | >"ジミンガー doesn't actually mean "blaming things on the Liberal Democratic Party of Japan". It's just an expression used to mock those who criticise the LDP." When people say things like "またジミンガーかよ" or "なぜ4条改正反対なのか、何故憲法改正反対なのか、ジミンガーを使わずに述べてほしい。", I think "blaming things on the LDP" is a perfectly fair translation. It's not great when it's used like this, though: "ジミンガー言う前に自身の“変態報道”& #偏向報道 を省みなさい!" I've tried revising it a little. _ >" a beginner learner or someone who isn't familiar with Japanese politics would have no idea what it means" I'm not a beginner learner and I'm familiar with Japanese politics but I was stumped when I saw this (as 悪性ジミンガ病 or sth like that). I'm sure lots of Japanese people who aren't on 2ch or discuss politics on twitter (i.e. the vast majority) would have no idea what it meant either (with or without the 病). Case in point, I just showed one of the ジミンガー tweets to a native speaker, and their interpretation was "地味な人ってこと?" I don't know that I would necessarily be opposed to including something like "but her e-mails" but one obvious difference is that this isn't actually stylized as "自民が・・・" where it's obvious what's intended and what each word is, i.e. it's as if "but her e-mails" were commonly stylized as "bthereemelz". |

Comments: | Perhaps not plenty more, but I don't consider this the sort of thing appropriate for a dictionary anyway. ジミンガー doesn't actually mean "blaming things on the Liberal Democratic Party of Japan". It's just an expression used to mock those who criticise the LDP. It would be like adding "But her emails" to an E->J dictionary. I think we can safely ignore it. Sure, a beginner learner or someone who isn't familiar with Japanese politics would have no idea what it means, but dictionaries don't need to cover every bit of written language. |
