13. | A* 2018-06-05 19:52:24 Robin Scott <...address hidden...>
Comments: | I prefer having separate [exp] entries for constructions like 何人か. To me, that's clearer. I don't think we have to worry about creating a bunch more 何[counter]か entries when we don't have corresponding 何[counter] entries. No ref (including us) has entries for 何匹, 何本, etc. But if we are keeping this gloss, I think GG5's approach is best - one sense rather than two. |
|
12. | A* 2018-06-05 03:36:19 Marcus Richert <...address hidden...>
Comments: | It's a grammar point, but the meaning of the word does change as a result of affixing か/も and both daijr and GG5 explicitly mention it. I don't think it's reasonable to expect dictionary users to understand that a word with "how many people" as the only gloss could ever come to mean "a number of people", regardless of what particle might follow. I don't think we should have separate entries for 何人も/か because then we might as well add 何匹も/か, 何本も/か, etc. as well. (I also don't think we really need the なんびとも or the なんにんか entries). _ I don't think "a number of people" absolutely has to be its own sense though, I'd be happy to do what GG5 does. |
|
11. | A* 2018-06-05 02:21:17 Jim Breen <...address hidden...>
Comments: | A few points: (a) we have a long-term 何人か/なんにんか entry already, with 66 sentences indexed to it (b) since we already have a 何人も/なにびとも, etc. entry, I feel it's quite appropriate to cover the 何人も/なんにんも case as well. Otherwise people who are not yet up to unpacking the grammar will be thrown by something like この街は何人もの著名人を生み出した. I'm guessing that's why GG5 included it, and I think we should too, either as a sense here or in a separate 何人も entry. |
|
10. | A* 2018-06-04 10:28:20 Robin Scott <...address hidden...>
Comments: | 何[counter]か/も is a grammar point. I don't think we should be including it as a sense. |

Comments: | Came here to add clarity that this can apply to people(friends, etc.), saw some other things... (and created 合流点 as part of that) I don't usually suggest this, but maybe one sense would be simpler for English speakers? Note that *all* of the glosses in [2] can be used perfectly well in English for rivers. If not, I've suggested a reorganization of the glosses to match the kokugos' split. Sankoku has two senses. One is explicitly rivers. One is explicitly people. Neither covers metaphorical uses like "tech trends coming together", it's not clear that sankoku's "people" definition should cover armies joining forces, or why cars should be more like rivers than people (merging of traffic). Maybe cars are more of a "flow". But this feels somewhat arbitrary. daijs seems like a clearer split, [1] = rivers (etymological meaning), [2] = people, groups, and など, everything else... I created the xref as one sense. To keep this entry as two senses, it seems the xref should perhaps also be split in two. The simplest split for me feels like "rivers" -> confluence, and "everything else" -> junction, meeting point, etc.... But again, all of the sense[2] glosses seem to work fine for rivers as well. I'd rather put vehicular traffic in a 3rd sense than arbitrarily squeeze it into the "river" sense, just because cars "flow"(or whatever the justification might be, it's honestly not quite clear to me). === At minimum, 51% explicitly verbal. Not clear from the old glosses, which should probably have more gerunds. Looking at the ngram numbers in the new proposal at the xref, it looks like we'd be better recommending the xref as a gloss for the noun "confluence". Just giving the xref will also expose the word "confluence" in situations where that might be the right translation for 合流. |

(ウンシャン from "unschön" is an example - it was a Meiji-to-early-Showa term)" Maybe this should be discussed again on the mailing list. |

Comments: | I might be wrong but is だ sometimes used to indicate a question? see phrases like だれだ? どこだ? I see the argument that these are just examples sense 1, "be, is" but I'm not really sure that's the case. Not for example how だ can not be followed by か (while verbs, na-adjectives, i-adjectives, nouns, can all come before a "か") e.g. X だれだか?X どこだか? on the other hand X お前だ? doesn't work as a question. so if it's a "question particle", it's only with interrogatives. Btw shouldn't senses 2 & 3 be a separate entry, maybe together with た? |

Comments: | >"ジミンガー doesn't actually mean "blaming things on the Liberal Democratic Party of Japan". It's just an expression used to mock those who criticise the LDP." When people say things like "またジミンガーかよ" or "なぜ4条改正反対なのか、何故憲法改正反対なのか、ジミンガーを使わずに述べてほしい。", I think "blaming things on the LDP" is a perfectly fair translation. It's not great when it's used like this, though: "ジミンガー言う前に自身の“変態報道”& #偏向報道 を省みなさい!" I've tried revising it a little. _ >" a beginner learner or someone who isn't familiar with Japanese politics would have no idea what it means" I'm not a beginner learner and I'm familiar with Japanese politics but I was stumped when I saw this (as 悪性ジミンガ病 or sth like that). I'm sure lots of Japanese people who aren't on 2ch or discuss politics on twitter (i.e. the vast majority) would have no idea what it meant either (with or without the 病). Case in point, I just showed one of the ジミンガー tweets to a native speaker, and their interpretation was "地味な人ってこと?" I don't know that I would necessarily be opposed to including something like "but her e-mails" but one obvious difference is that this isn't actually stylized as "自民が・・・" where it's obvious what's intended and what each word is, i.e. it's as if "but her e-mails" were commonly stylized as "bthereemelz". |

Comments: | Perhaps not plenty more, but I don't consider this the sort of thing appropriate for a dictionary anyway. ジミンガー doesn't actually mean "blaming things on the Liberal Democratic Party of Japan". It's just an expression used to mock those who criticise the LDP. It would be like adding "But her emails" to an E->J dictionary. I think we can safely ignore it. Sure, a beginner learner or someone who isn't familiar with Japanese politics would have no idea what it means, but dictionaries don't need to cover every bit of written language. |

Refs: | Number one urban-dictionary entry for happy-go-lucky(matches my intuitions): Happy-Go-Lucky: A person who is incredibly optimistic and high on life. They are usually peppy and make the best out of every situation. They're fun to be around and can brighten anyone's day. Wouldn't we all want to be as Happy-Go-Lucky as her? defn 2:Easy going, carefree, nonchalant. defn 3:To be happy go lucky, is to be cheerful about most all things. To have a positive view on life. defn 4:A person who is a pleasure to be around. They dont sweat the small stuff. They tend to laugh easily but not forceably so. They tend not to care about trival matters. They are most always well adjusted and have no anger issues. ======= One the weight of this phrase (note the terms that surround it. used somewhat lightly in the context of being optimistic sports fans in an unlikely-to-succeed scenario, I think) (with photo for some context, a good post/example) イカれてる、狂ってる、妄想癖、脳内お花畑、老害、鳩胸などの苦情は受け付けません。読んじゃったアナタが悪い笑 https://twitter.com/Taro_Yamakawa/status/1637069986815688704 ======= https://hinative.com/questions/19689747 What does お花畑の本領発揮 mean? |
Comments: | Actually, I thought to google synonyms for "space cadet" and think I found something that is actually quite a good match. "head in the clouds". Covers a lot of the usage I've seen, essentially-positive imagery with a negative connotation, but that can be used introspectively. (I had my head in the clouds, do I have my head in the clouds/ is my head in the clouds?). It matches people whose behavior changes after falling in love, or who live their lives in blissful ignorance of the reality that needs to be dealt with. It is also applicable as a temporary state. Everything I have seen of 脳内お花畑 suggests that it needs not be permanent. (Can be a 厨二病 condition you outgrow, being in love, or a situation when your mind is temporarily somewhere else). Removed "dreamer", because this is usually a positive term in English. It's more "optimist" than ignorant. Removed "happy-go-lucky", because this is mostly a positive (and permanent) character attribute(see refs). And I think "head in the cloud" covers what is needed. As a practical matter, when would you gloss a Japanese derogatory insult with an English compliment? I changed the [lit] gloss to something more approachable, but still [lit], (and if we add 頭の中 it will differ only as "inside the head" vs "inside the brain", or maybe not differ at all). It may be that お花畑 merits some kind of note on this of its own. Seems that this brain=お花畑 analogy is well enough understood お花畑 might stand alone with sufficient context. Might serve in place of creating a bunch of 頭の中... variations. Other potential English glosses... space cadet blissfully ignorant person someone out of touch with reality someone in a world of their own absent-minded person |

Makes wonder if something like "blissfully ignorant" might work in some cases. https://twitter.com/hirox246/status/1635556667331948544 As an English gloss of a mild insult in this category, I saw "space cadet" (specifically attached to 天然ボケ), thought that was interesting. urbandictionary includes of spacecadet: not necessarily a person of low intelligence or a heavy drug user, but rather one who is so easily lost in reverie that he or she loses all awareness of the surrounding physical world. This usage mirrors the self-referential use here. Basically "Is my infatuation with my partner causing 脳内御花畑". Not that anyone would use "space cadet" self-referentially though. 頭の中お花畑状態?恋への浮かれ度チェックリスト https://mdpr.jp/column/detail/2238138 |
