Comments: | I'm sorry but I still don't think that's actually a counter. There are many cases where you can use numeric+noun. I can have a 10アンペア circuit, but that doesn't mean アンペア is a counter. |

|
Comments: | I actually think many of the sentences correspond to (current) sense 2 (for a short while; for a moment; etc.), which is sense 1 in daijr. It's not a particularly short period of time, so "for an instant" probably isn't appropriate. The other sense was meant to refer to much longer periods of time as in sentences like "しばらく雨が降っていない. It hasn't rained for some time." ---- Daijs and koj have しばらく as a reading for 須臾. |

Comments: | Is that enough of a reason to include it, though? Kanji dictionaries are full of characters that aren't used any more. Some other examples from Kanjigen: 霄 (そら), 坤・壌 (つち), 蹊・迪 (みち). We don't typically include these kanji in entries. |

Comments: | I'm OK having this as an entry (and prob. あの道 and この道) but I don't think the 2nd sense should be there. Either we do every single sense from 道, or we do just one, or we're being misleading. If it really must be kept, I think the note must go. What does "usual meaning" mean? I have my doubts it's actually "usual" as in "more common." But if it were, why isn't it sense 1? I think small inconsistencies like these makes the dictionary harder to use. |
|
14. | A 2020-06-20 00:44:19 Jim Breen <...address hidden...>
Comments: | Probably time to call it a day on this one. I'm leaving it in largely because of its presence in the JEs. I'm also leaving in the "usual meaning" because I'm aware this is primarily a decoding/passive dictionary and there's a risk that learners might think sense 1 is the only meaning of the expression. I see that GG5 also has この道 entry referencing the same sense of 道 (but not one for あの道.) [Daijr has a この道 entry too; for the 1927 song "この道はいつか来た道".] |

Comments: | I don't think it's indicating a question; it's more of an abbreviation of ですか. (We wouldn't split an entry like this.) |

12. | A* 2020-01-28 02:28:30
Comments: | I might be wrong but is だ sometimes used to indicate a question? see phrases like だれだ? どこだ? I see the argument that these are just examples sense 1, "be, is" but I'm not really sure that's the case. Not for example how だ can not be followed by か (while verbs, na-adjectives, i-adjectives, nouns, can all come before a "か") e.g. X だれだか?X どこだか? on the other hand X お前だ? doesn't work as a question. so if it's a "question particle", it's only with interrogatives. Btw shouldn't senses 2 & 3 be a separate entry, maybe together with た? |

Comments: | I've approved Noa's correction. I thought I'd reopen it if anyone wants to comment or edit it. Rene put this in in 2007 as "polite word formed by prefixing "o-" or "-go" to its base" Paul Blay edited it to the current gloss, and commented: 美化語 does not refer just to adding o-, go- to base words. Take the 大辞林 reference quoted ... 敬語の一種で、言葉遣いを上品にするもの。「お米」「おいしい」など。 おいしい may have historically come from いしい but that isn't directly relevant to 美化語 usage in modern Japanese. Rather it is a word with a more classy feel than, say, うまい. (As 広辞苑 says on おいしい - 「うまい」よりも上品な語). Similarly おなか, ごはん involve use of different vocabulary not just adding 御 to make existing words in use in modern Japanese more 'polite'. Also not all words with o-, go- added count as 美化語, if they're added to words related to the state of the person being talked to (that person's in-group, etc.), items belonging to that person etc. then they are 尊敬語. 美化語 refers to changes made to speech, writing, to make it more elegant/polite without directly relating to any up/down honorific/humble divides. |

Refs: | Number one urban-dictionary entry for happy-go-lucky(matches my intuitions): Happy-Go-Lucky: A person who is incredibly optimistic and high on life. They are usually peppy and make the best out of every situation. They're fun to be around and can brighten anyone's day. Wouldn't we all want to be as Happy-Go-Lucky as her? defn 2:Easy going, carefree, nonchalant. defn 3:To be happy go lucky, is to be cheerful about most all things. To have a positive view on life. defn 4:A person who is a pleasure to be around. They dont sweat the small stuff. They tend to laugh easily but not forceably so. They tend not to care about trival matters. They are most always well adjusted and have no anger issues. ======= One the weight of this phrase (note the terms that surround it. used somewhat lightly in the context of being optimistic sports fans in an unlikely-to-succeed scenario, I think) (with photo for some context, a good post/example) イカれてる、狂ってる、妄想癖、脳内お花畑、老害、鳩胸などの苦情は受け付けません。読んじゃったアナタが悪い笑 https://twitter.com/Taro_Yamakawa/status/1637069986815688704 ======= https://hinative.com/questions/19689747 What does お花畑の本領発揮 mean? |
Comments: | Actually, I thought to google synonyms for "space cadet" and think I found something that is actually quite a good match. "head in the clouds". Covers a lot of the usage I've seen, essentially-positive imagery with a negative connotation, but that can be used introspectively. (I had my head in the clouds, do I have my head in the clouds/ is my head in the clouds?). It matches people whose behavior changes after falling in love, or who live their lives in blissful ignorance of the reality that needs to be dealt with. It is also applicable as a temporary state. Everything I have seen of 脳内お花畑 suggests that it needs not be permanent. (Can be a 厨二病 condition you outgrow, being in love, or a situation when your mind is temporarily somewhere else). Removed "dreamer", because this is usually a positive term in English. It's more "optimist" than ignorant. Removed "happy-go-lucky", because this is mostly a positive (and permanent) character attribute(see refs). And I think "head in the cloud" covers what is needed. As a practical matter, when would you gloss a Japanese derogatory insult with an English compliment? I changed the [lit] gloss to something more approachable, but still [lit], (and if we add 頭の中 it will differ only as "inside the head" vs "inside the brain", or maybe not differ at all). It may be that お花畑 merits some kind of note on this of its own. Seems that this brain=お花畑 analogy is well enough understood お花畑 might stand alone with sufficient context. Might serve in place of creating a bunch of 頭の中... variations. Other potential English glosses... space cadet blissfully ignorant person someone out of touch with reality someone in a world of their own absent-minded person |

Makes wonder if something like "blissfully ignorant" might work in some cases. https://twitter.com/hirox246/status/1635556667331948544 As an English gloss of a mild insult in this category, I saw "space cadet" (specifically attached to 天然ボケ), thought that was interesting. urbandictionary includes of spacecadet: not necessarily a person of low intelligence or a heavy drug user, but rather one who is so easily lost in reverie that he or she loses all awareness of the surrounding physical world. This usage mirrors the self-referential use here. Basically "Is my infatuation with my partner causing 脳内御花畑". Not that anyone would use "space cadet" self-referentially though. 頭の中お花畑状態?恋への浮かれ度チェックリスト https://mdpr.jp/column/detail/2238138 |

Comments: | Feel free to close this immediately if there is nothing of interest to anyone. I encountered a significantly popular variation in the wild (頭の中), and just thought I'd mention it. Too many grammatical variations to have an idea of what I would do with it anyway. |
