|
Comments: | Daijr/s includes pitch accent in sense 1. I think intonation is a separate concept. I've added some more glosses. As for accent in the "distinctive way of pronouncing a language" sense, I don't think アクセント is typically used in that way. The Tatoeba examples like "アクセントで彼がドイツ人だとわかる" are translations of English sentences, and they've used アクセント because there's no word in Japanese that corresponds exactly to this sense of "accent". However, that's probably enough of a reason to include it as a sense. I think the entry looks OK now. |

Comments: | I think "pitch accent" belongs with intonation. Is there a missing sense for accent in general, perhaps relating to Daijirin's sense 2? Many of the Tatoeba examples refer to this, but it doesn't really fit either sense 1 or 2. Tomayto/tomarto is neither stress nor intonation. I've tentatively added this. For アクサン the relationship is rather unclear. Sense 1 of アクサン in Daijirin simply says "アクセント" All senses? |

(ウンシャン from "unschön" is an example - it was a Meiji-to-early-Showa term)" Maybe this should be discussed again on the mailing list. |

Comments: | I'm OK having this as an entry (and prob. あの道 and この道) but I don't think the 2nd sense should be there. Either we do every single sense from 道, or we do just one, or we're being misleading. If it really must be kept, I think the note must go. What does "usual meaning" mean? I have my doubts it's actually "usual" as in "more common." But if it were, why isn't it sense 1? I think small inconsistencies like these makes the dictionary harder to use. |
|
14. | A 2020-06-20 00:44:19 Jim Breen <...address hidden...> | |
Comments: | Probably time to call it a day on this one. I'm leaving it in largely because of its presence in the JEs. I'm also leaving in the "usual meaning" because I'm aware this is primarily a decoding/passive dictionary and there's a risk that learners might think sense 1 is the only meaning of the expression. I see that GG5 also has この道 entry referencing the same sense of 道 (but not one for あの道.) [Daijr has a この道 entry too; for the 1927 song "この道はいつか来た道".] |
