Refs: | daijs has no entry at all for 心気 daijs: 辛気臭い, entry, kanji for is: 辛気(臭い) (i.e くさい kanji optional). daijs has an entry with two senses for 辛気 with two senses, and 辛気臭い is given as an extra headword within that. Both, as noted earlier, are marked as dialects (we have marked 辛気臭い as kansai-ben). Both senses appear to me to be variants of [2]: [1] (もと関西方言)気がくさくさして、めいるようすだ。
|
Comments: | Strongly recommend splitting this entry. First, [notes] have limited effect for many end-users, unfortunately, in correcting kanji forms. But more importantly, I don't think 辛気 actually overlaps [1], or even vise-versa, except as orthographic mistakes. Compare, for example, the ngrams for 辛気臭(くさ)い (25,000+) and 心気臭(くさ)い(~100). I think this would be better handled, if at all, as [sk] entries("spelling errors"). [2] appears to me to be predominantly as 辛気くさい, so I think the xref is appropriate. |

|
Comments: | Although for certain types of loans only 利息 is used, 利子 can also refer to interest on loans (as well as deposits). It's customary to use 利子 for interest paid by the borrower and 利息 for interest earned by the lender (but this is just a matter of perspective; it's the same money). The links above also point out that JP Bank uses 利子 for interest earned on deposits while other banks use 利息. I think the entries should be put back to how they were. |

Comments: | Updating this to properly distinguish 利子 from 利息. Definitions: - first reference: 慣用的に、利子は貯金などに対して発生するので「受け取れるもの」、利息は借入れなどに対して発生するので「支払うもの」と使い分けます。そのため、ローンで支払う手数料を「利子」と呼ぶことはあまりありません。あくまでもローンで支払う手数料は「利息」です。 - second reference: 利子: お金を借りる側が、貸した側に元本に追加して支払うお金のことをさします。利子は、貸し借りした金額に金利をかけて計算されます。 |

Comments: | Saw an attempt to add "controversial" as an adjective in 2017(Rejected (id: 1951831)). It seems this was not without some merit. (see refs) Seems this can be done with a simple "to be controversial" (a la 役に立つ - "to be useful"). I removed "a" from "to cause a controversy". Both are grammatical and have their uses, but compare google hits: "Trump caused controversy when" many pages of results "Trump caused a controversy when" 6 results "The ruling caused controversy" 27 individual results "The ruling caused a controversy" zero results This seems consistent with 物議 as general public outcry. This use of "controversy" is as "a lot of public disagreement", not "a specific controversial event". "to give rise to hostile comment" is not incorrect, but it also doesn't seem likely to be used as a real-world gloss. I can't find evidence for "to provoke", or see how this would work in a sentence. "He provoked her".... ? eij was the source. Was this "to provoke controversy"? Or maybe the adjective "provocative" (as in "a provocative/controversial art installation"). There is some *minimal* support online(ie. random blogs) for glossing 物議を醸す as "provocative", but there are better Japanese words for this. I generally encounter 挑発的 when looking, such as here(which uses both): https://www.vanilla-gallery.com/archives/2019/20191126ab.html ...exploring provocative, controversial and surreal international artists. ...物議を醸す挑発的な現代美術の主要アーティスト Adding "to be provocative" here just muddies the waters for both entries (物議を醸す and 挑発的). |

Comments: | In the サラリーマン entry, "salaryman" is tagged as wasei. I think it could be tagged both as wasei and be a gloss, as it does see some usage in English, but the two entries should at least be aligned. I don't think the fact it's only a prefix/suffix changes it's an abbreviation. The [abbr] tag is a good etymology indicator, if nothing else. |
