Comments: | I think "smoothly" should be fine for sense 2? We did discuss pretty much this issue on the mailing list in February ("glosses not matching PoS"). One solution is to push the vs to the front and gloss it as "to be slimy; to be slippery", though this is pretty the one thing we decided we wouldn't do back in Feb, on Robin's initiative. I would certainly not be opposed to it, though. |

Comments: | I'm happy with this as it is for now, so I'll approve it and reopen it to keep the general issue going. I can't help feeling that in the general situation with these beasties we need something more than a combination of adjectival glosses and adv,adv-to,vs as POS. Also we can't have a note for every one of them. I don't really want another (pseudo) POS. |
|
11. | A* 2018-12-06 22:59:13 Robin Scott <...address hidden...> | |
Comments: | I don't think it's typically adj-f. Also, we should probably avoid using tag names in notes since they're meaningless to people who haven't read the help page. While I do feel that every effort should be made to have the glosses agree with the leading PoS tag, these onomatopoeic adverbs can be a real pain. It's an adverb first and foremost, so I think adv needs to come first, but adjective glosses are more useful than anything else. There are hundreds of adverbs like this. It would be good to decide on a policy so that we're all on the same page. |

Comments: | Sense 4 was my attempt at merging senses 2 and 3 (so that our entry is in line with the kokugos). Going by daijr's sense 2 and daijs's sense 3 definitions, I still feel this is the best approach. |

Comments: | Suggest a split, with [2] perhaps getting its own entry headed by 亘る (in spite of statistics). I've made edits which I don't expect to stand as-is. They reflect my understanding of the situation. sankoku gives two entries, one for 亘る alone with sense [2], and one for 渡る;渉る, with literally 12 different senses. (wiktionary also has a pile of senses) Quite coincidentally, this is on Stephen's spreadsheet, so might have gotten a look-over anyway. I just stumbled into this entry. https://github.com/JMdictProject/JMdictIssues/issues/107 The [usu.] comments seem to differ from actual practice. Primarily it looks like [1] is 渡, and [2] *should be* 亘. In practice, [2] is [uk], and 渡 is actually the most common kanji form. (I'm assuming sense[2] statistics are reflected in 年にわたって statistics). Note: the first corrected essay (first ref.) did not replace に渡って with 亘って, but kana わたって. If we split off 亘る, this might be a case for making a prescriptive overrule of the statistics, putting 亘る as the top-level kanji, and putting a usage [note=]. Obviously 渡る will necessarily be present on both entries. Same rationale would apply to our standalone entry に渡って, which should possible by headed as に亘って. (or, we agree the world has changed, stodgy Japanese lit. teachers not withstanding). What is more useful for us to report as the "best" kanji? The one that is most-used, or the one that won't lose marks on an essay? 航る is limited to sea-crossings, but I tacked it on. Probably needs a sense to handle correctly. There is one example of this use in furigana.info. |

Comments: | I don't think this is a noun or vs. It's almost always in the form ボッコボコにする (or される, etc.). In daijs's ぼこぼこ entry, this sense is 形動. I've added a second sense. I see this usage quite a lot. |

Comments: | I do think there's a difference between 常識~ (and also 想定~) and 予算~ as they are to my mind less obvious and compositional than and used in a more idiomatic (non-literal) way and not what an English-speaker would come up with, translating from English. I still think this and/or the -内-less version should be an entry/entries, but I won't protest if this is deleted. (it's about time we make a decision either way) |
