Those n-grams tell the story. It's not a noun (despite Daijirin's usual "名") and it's far more に/の than な. In fact almost all the JE examples are 格段の and 格段に.

I like that, and have attempted to weave it in. The person who entered the original in 2006 was translating the Japanese Wikipedia page, and noted:
"I did my best to translate the meaning, but it's not one of those words that has a single clear translation. Personally I think it would be better to have some sort of translation available, but will not be offended in any way if you decide that this entry is too wishy-washy and delete it."
Shortly after that Kanji Haitani entered the 閑寂枯淡 entry, using the same gloss. I think they should be aligned if this is accepted.

I agree it doesn't look right having a list of species under one sense, and I'm not convinced it's necessary to mention them at all (except maybe one or two as examples).

I don't think we should have to do a note here. What I reacted to is that this is not how we usually do these entries. Each line has 
a completely separate gloss that's not compatible with the others. If we split each gloss into a separate sense, I think that would 
be closer to what we normally do, but I'm not really sure I think that's the best approach either. if we want to include all these 
latin names, shouldn't the first line be something like

Given that we don't have any other "[adjective stem]っ" entries, I'm not sure we should be making an exception for こわっ even if it is more common that こわ.
I suspect the reason that koj (and daijs) have こわ as an entry at all is that it's the only adjective that can be written in this form (when used as an interjection). With others, it's always 高っ, 寒っ, etc., never たか、さむ.

It strikes me odd to keep こわ but remove こわっ - my impression is that this is many more times common. Considering that こわ is in koj, I 
agree that we should keep that entry, but I'm wondering if we can't bend the 2/3 rule just a little (we've done it before) to include this 
in the こわ entry? Just a thought, though.

Fixed. I fiddled the heuristic that tests if the katakana version for a "uk" should be first. It now only considers the first sense, so if a "scientific name" is in a later sense it won't put the katakana first.

I do think there's a difference between 常識～ (and also 想定～) and 予算～ as they are to my mind less obvious and compositional than

decision either way)
