Comments: | Those n-grams tell the story. It's not a noun (despite Daijirin's usual "名") and it's far more に/の than な. In fact almost all the JE examples are 格段の and 格段に. I'll approve and reopen in case there's further discussion. I think staying with adjectival glosses, which is what all the JEs have, is appropriate. |

Comments: | A very common usage of this is in things like "私は犬が恐い。I am afraid of dogs." More than half of the 111 Tanaka sentences are using this ...が恐い pattern, but we don't have "afraid" in the main sense. The JEs all embed this in sense 1 as examples, e.g. GG5's "私は雷が怖い. I'm frightened of thunder.", but I think it probably could go in a sense of its own. Alternatively the "(I'm) afraid" sense could be broadened. |

Comments: | I think "interrupt" and "cut into (a conversation)" are better as translations for 口を挟む or 言葉を挟む. I've added some more glosses. I've made a separate sense for "catch (a finger, etc.)" (as in meikyo). It looks a bit out of place in sense 1. Added a "to harbour" sense (in GG5 and daijs). The sentences need updating (only 3 are indexed). |

Comments: | This is usually used in the context of coaxial splitters/combiners, as in cable TV, etc. There is a question as to whether this entry could/should be merged with 混合機, as has been done with many other ~器/~機 terms. From what I'm seeing 混合機 is always a mixer/blender of materials, ingredients, etc. and 混合器 is usually just for frequencies, but Eijiro has a few outliers: ■ジェット混合器 : jet mixer ■ホウ酸混合器 : boric acid blender ■混合器具 : mixing tool A full merge is probably not appropriate, but maybe a second sense for this one with a "usu. 混合機" comment? |

Comments: | Given that we don't have any other "[adjective stem]っ" entries, I'm not sure we should be making an exception for こわっ even if it is more common that こわ. I suspect the reason that koj (and daijs) have こわ as an entry at all is that it's the only adjective that can be written in this form (when used as an interjection). With others, it's always 高っ, 寒っ, etc., never たか、さむ. |
|
4. | D* 2018-11-06 23:43:55 Marcus Richert <...address hidden...> | |
Comments: | It strikes me odd to keep こわ but remove こわっ - my impression is that this is many more times common. Considering that こわ is in koj, I agree that we should keep that entry, but I'm wondering if we can't bend the 2/3 rule just a little (we've done it before) to include this in the こわ entry? Just a thought, though. |

Comments: | サーチュイン遺伝子 would be "sirtuin gene". It's A+B and not that common. "biochem" rather than "chem". |

Comments: | "lethality" is certainly more common, but its meaning may not be so clear to all users. That's why I put in a second gloss. GG5 leads with "effectiveness". Relative frequencies of the English glosses shouldn't be the sole reason for deleting them. |
