"We all had to change from outdoor to indoor shoes as soon as we entered the school, and 'no', I never saw any love-note confessions in the shoe cubbies".

(1.6 million "likes", so probably 20+ million views, no one in the comments questioning the vocab)

As an aside, some really nice pictures and a write-up in a non-school context:
"Build your own shoe cubby"
https://sincerelysarad.com/tag/diy-shoe-cubby/
  Comments:
How about:
shoe cubby (esp. in a school)

"Native English speaker describing Japanese public school teaching experience" is a pretty common J->E scenario.

Video shows usage in the first 10~15 seconds. I did not go looking for this video to make any kind of point, youtube dumped it on me randomly. Usage exactly matches my intuition. The poster is also American, so possibly AmE.

Maybe it's not possible to add "cubby" with our current glossing policies. In any case, both this and "shoe cupboard" point to a broader conversation I'd like to have on github when I can find the time. Suddenly busy with work, could be a while.

Not going to be worked up if "cubby" is not added, but I thought you might find this real-world example interesting. I'd be curious if your "gut" reaction differs if seeing it live, but that's neither here nor there.

Office storage > Shoe storage, getabako (shoe cabinet)
  Comments:
I've been meaning to come and address "clog" for a while now. We don't even have "clog" on the "geta" entry.

I don't personally care for "shoe cupboard"; I feel like cupboards go in kitchens, and/or store food and kitchen supplies. The internet has ample evidence that "shoe cupboard" is used, but even so, "cabinet" appears to be a stronger match... do we need both? If I search for "shoe cupboard" most of the image results come up with "shoe cabinet" in the titles.

Skimming through reverso, there was one school-specific gloss of "shoe cubby", which really does evoke elementary school vibes and seems like a great translation to me. I quite like it.

Compare google image search:
下駄箱 小学生
elementary school shoe cubby

Basically an exact match.

Similarly, you can compare a straight "shoe cabinet" with 下駄箱, and they basically match exactly.

I think just the one gloss is OK.

I think the additional gloss was also
helpful for English speakers. Also, while
it's true that JMdict is not primarily
aimed at Japanese users, we certainly have
plenty of them.
7. A* 2018-11-28 22:16:31  Robin Scott <...address hidden...>
  Comments:
Gerund glosses can be helpful but I don't think they add anything in this case. A learner will have no trouble translating "彼はアメリカに入国した" as "He entered America" from the gloss "entry into a country".
GG5, Eijro, etc. are aimed primarily at Japanese speakers (i.e. English learners) so it's helpful to have similar glosses in different forms. We don't really have to do that in JMdict.

It's true that "cut (of meat)" still means "part" of the body, but I still think it'd be more helpful to split it out into its own sense.
Approving, though.
6. A* 2018-11-28 22:39:06  Robin Scott <...address hidden...>
  Comments:
I agree that "part of a body" shouldn't be a separate sense. It just creates unnecessary overlap.
But I'm not sure "cut of meat" can be considered a separate sense either. It still means "part" or "region" in that context.
This is my suggestion.

I note that daijr's sense 1 ("position of a part") isn't even covered here. The JEs and daijs have ignored it as well, though.

daijr does have two senses:
① 全体に対するある部分の位置。 ② 生物の体で、全体に対しての一部分をさしていうことば。 「身体各-の名称」 「食肉-」
daijr's sense two might be broader than just "cut" but considering compounds like 希少部位 I think "cut" definitely should be its own
sense, esp. considering this is a wa-ei.

Whilst I agree that the most "typical"/"normal" なた is superficially somewhat similar to a cleaver (though not nearly as broad), a fundamental defining characteristic of a cleaver is still that it is a butcher/kitchen knife. (and again, the many significant differences I mentioned before)
There are many knives that a layman wouldn't be able to tell apart, just to look at them, that are nevertheless in very distinct and different categories. (the same applies to, e.g., axes)

...and many なた do not have that distinctive rectangular shape, as is clear from the references I mention. Note that 剣鉈 and 鉈鎌 are types of 鉈.

  Comments:
A cleaver is a butcher/kitchen knife.
It has a completely different purpose and also possess very different blades, to a nata. A lot broader blade (a lot broader than the handle, notably) and though they are relatively thick and sturdy, they are significantly less so, than a nata. A lot of typical uses of a nata (especially splitting wood), would utterly ruin any cleaver.
The closest thing to a nata, would be a machete or a hunting knife. (and ken'nata do look like the latter, as well as being used as such, in addition to its other uses)
It is neither, however, so it would be wrong to call it such.

The angle is notable (though not universal/required), but I guess it's not really necessary to mention.
Also the blade is often of uniform breadth (basically a rectangle) aside from ken'nata (剣鉈), which have a more typical knife shape as well as usually being straight, but the same applies to that, so no need to mention it either, I suppose.
Speaking of which: Adding an entry for 剣鉈 may be a good idea.

I've been reading up on "zither" and it seems it's very widely used for plucked string instruments. Although "zither" is German it's from a Greek root; in fact the same root as "guitar". And it's used widely as a family name, so I guess I'll just have to accept it. "zither-like instrument" is too clumsy.

  Comments:
I've been aware of the colour scheme since my first visit to Japan in 1981. My point is that JR's decision to put the livery colour into the name of the place doesn't really relate to the English meaning. I don't mind adding literal translations of quirky terms, but one shouldn't go too far. I wouldn't add "[lit] little red" to 赤ちゃん, for example.
7. A* 2019-08-21 01:01:11  Opencooper
  Comments:
Well, looking at Google Images, there is always a prominent green element in the signage for these. Knowing that it's literally "green" would help users of the dictionary make the connection.

Sorry, but to me "storage space" and "space to store things" are synonyms. I think Robins' addition is enough.
About 10% of the time it seems to mean/include storage units, but I think the "esp" covers that.

収納場所[スペース] storage space.
この分譲マンションは収納場所が少ない. This condo doesn't have enough 「storage space [places to put things].
  Comments:
I just think having "space to store things" or something like that is helpful and I don't see how it subtracts anything from the entry. A
translator using jmdict would be happy to immediately have more than one synonym to choose from. Sometimes "space to store things" will be
the more natural-sounding translation and as such, I think we should include it.
4. A* 2018-11-28 23:21:13  Robin Scott <...address hidden...>
  Comments:
The English Google image results are misleading. When I hear "storage space", I think of storage space in a home, not self-storage units.
Before removing the other gloss, I did a Google image search for "収納スペース" and the results matched what I expected.
We could add this to avoid confusion.

  Comments:
There's a difference between the two
glosses though - check google images for
"storage space" and it's all self-storage
units. The Japanese word is much wider
than that and is actually mainly about
storage space in one's home. This is
better conveyed by "space to store
things," but it's a less straight-forward
translation so it shouldn't be the first
gloss.
Like I mentioned in the 入国 entry - it's
not like the other major wa-ei's are
trying to avoid having several similar-
sounding glosses, so I don't think we need
to worry about being concise either. Even
similar-sounding glosses can help to
convey the full range of the Japanese
word.

Tricky to gloss (as are all x感覚 entries really. Some of the others could need some revision).

The n-grams from 2007 are quite reasonable, but now there are only 80 WWW hits, some of which are old and some are a bit bogus (中国人のインタネットユーザー, etc.). In fact the n-grams get inflated that way too.
I think it can be dropped for now.

I think we need to wait until it's more established as a term (if that ever happens). It doesn't even have a Wikipedia page right now.

This might have been a buzzword that fizzled out already or an emerging term (around since a couple of years ago), I don't know.
6 or so hits past 6 months for "ヒトのインターネット" on twitter. 9 past week for "Internet of Humans".
Maybe worth including already just in case this turns out being the next big thing?

Is there a source for this somewhere? Eij has "ロックス" (not ラックス) as the kana pronunciation for "lox". Jawiki has an article as well
on ロックス (lox)
https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/ロックス
There's an audio file associated with this entry so if we want an entry for ロックス, it has to be a new one.
