Yes, you're right. It's the post itself

I think "Internet pitchfork mob" is a good
keyword/key phrase to include in a gloss

phenomenon.

Not necessarily harassment. Usually it's a thing (article, statement, policy, etc.) that does the 炎上ing.
How about "stirring up a storm of criticism online"? I think it's an improvement on the gloss I came up with last year.

History:
7. A 2018-11-29 02:22:41  Marcus Richert <...address hidden...>
  Comments:
It's true that "cut (of meat)" still means "part" of the body, but I still think it'd be more helpful to split it out into its own sense.
Approving, though.
6. A* 2018-11-28 22:39:06  Robin Scott <...address hidden...>
  Comments:
I agree that "part of a body" shouldn't be a separate sense. It just creates unnecessary overlap.
But I'm not sure "cut of meat" can be considered a separate sense either. It still means "part" or "region" in that context.
This is my suggestion.
---
I note that daijr's sense 1 ("position of a part") isn't even covered here. The JEs and daijs have ignored it as well, though.

It's closer to the daijr definition for
sure, but is it more helpful for our

daijr does have two senses:
① 全体に対するある部分の位置。 ② 生物の体で、全体に対しての一部分をさしていうことば。 「身体各-の名称」 「食肉-」
daijr's sense two might be broader than just "cut" but considering compounds like 希少部位 I think "cut" definitely should be its own
sense, esp. considering this is a wa-ei.

daij have the first two senses, but I think there's a third, which I think daijs' example for its sense 2 is actually an example of:
"2 あるものの、成立・存在の根本となる条件。「人命尊重が大前提だ」"
in English, you can't really translate this as "respect for human life is an important condition". An important condition for what?
Daijs specifies that this "成立・存在の根本となる条件" is specifically for "あるもの" so I don't think you can really leave that part
out. Same thing with the usage here:
https://www.facebook.com/ppkyoto/posts/937243033133944
picture from a sign in a temple garden reading: "苔もいきものです。大事にしましょう", with a caption by the person posting the photo:
"これが大前提です。"
Another example:
https://twitter.com/into__the_void/status/1065167741756297217
"落書きはいけません…という大前提はあったとしても、描かれた場所と内容によっては特別な意味を持ってしまうものもある。"
The meaning is an even more generalized version of sense 2, which in itself is probably a more generalized version of sense 3.
  Comments:
In terms of commonality, sense 1 should probably come last.

It can't be meaningful to look at the ngrams for an entry like these - there will be gazillions of false hits, and the real thing missed. Three conjugations of a single -む verb gets over 150k in the ngrams - obviously じゃう should also get spec1 and should definitely not be hidden.

Hard to prove how common it is with the ngrams

ちまう is tokyo dialect according to wiki and
https://dictionary.goo.ne.jp/leaf/dialect/1023/m0u/

I'm not sure about じまう - maybe it should be split out.
  Comments:
this and まう and しまう seem incomplete - they all also have this second meaning from daijs "㋐その動作・行為が完了する、すっかりその状態に
なる意を表す。「早く食べて―・いなさい」「所帯染みて―・う」「あきれて―・う」
㋑そのつもりでないのに、ある事態が実現する意を表す。「負けて―・った」「まずいところを見られて―・った」"

I agree it doesn't look right having a list of species under one sense, and I'm not convinced it's necessary to mention them at all (except maybe one or two as examples).
7. A* 2018-11-25 07:25:09  Marcus Richert <...address hidden...>
  Comments:
I don't think we should have to do a note here. What I reacted to is that this is not how we usually do these entries. Each line has
a completely separate gloss that's not compatible with the others. If we split each gloss into a separate sense, I think that would
be closer to what we normally do, but I'm not really sure I think that's the best approach either. if we want to include all these
latin names, shouldn't the first line be something like

hairy mite (in reference to a large number of species including Trombidiidae spp., Erythraeoidea spp., Trombiculidae spp.,
Tetranychidae spp., Cheyletidae spp.)

but my preference would be a much simpler

hairy mite (esp. red velvet mite)

or

hairy mite (esp. red velvet mite, Trombidiidae spp.)

If so, I think that strengthens the case to include it, but it's hard to look into of course.
In general, we have included some pretty obscure kanji forms in plenty of entries. As long as they're properly marked as
iK or oK, I don't think it's that much of an issue. Dictionary developers can decide for themselves how prominently (or
not) they want to display these.

3. A* 2018-11-23 02:38:08  Marcus Richert <...address hidden...>
  Comments:
Yes, entries like this one are tricky because I agree we should be careful not to screw things up for people using jmdict for text
glossing (with tools like rikai-chan, etc.)
Sense 2 is tricky because really the "you" should be within the brackets too, probably (the subject could be a third person)
I'm not sure sense 1 is an "abbreviation" of sense 2, really. I mean you could argue that it's "何だと言った?" but I'm not convinced.
If there was an eloquent way to phrase a note on sense 1 to explain the phrase only has this meaning when it's not used as a sub
clause (not sure of the terminology here)...

Brian, please, several members of the editorial team have repeatedly asked you to be more brief in your edit summaries. I'm not reading what you wrote this time but rejecting it based only on the quality of the edit itself. We don't include long notes like the one you've suggested on individual English glosses, and while it's true we have several entries mentioning 2ch that should probably be updated, but 2ch as a site doesn't exist under that name any longer, and has splintered as well into more than 1 site IIRC.

(Internet slang, derogatory) A new, inexperienced, and presumably teenage user who joins an online community (especially 4chan) during the American school holidays at summer

https://knowyourmeme.com/memes/summerfag
Summerfag is a term used by users on the site 4chan as underage users who post on 4chan instead of going to school. The term is often used as a scapegoat for bad posts, especially in highly populated boards such as /b/.

Does ‘summer Reddit’ really exist?
https://www.reddit.com/r/TheoryOfReddit/comments/8q9jvg/does_summer_reddit_really_exist/
Came from 4chan. Another way for users to show superiority & differentiate themselves from one another; “ I’m an oldfag, you’re just some summerfag “ another one I’ve heard a lot is “sure is summer in here. I’m sure there’s some truth to it, but is probably blown out of proportion. I don’t think the number of users grows THAT much

This post is 6 years old now
https://www.quora.com/How-is-2chan-and-4chan-different
4chan is English and 2chan is Japanese. Moot founded 4chan 14 years ago, he also owned it for a long period of time until he resigned from his position and later on 4chan was bought by Hiroyuki Nishimura, the founder of 2chan(Futaba Channel) in which 4chan was based on.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2channel
2channel and its successors are more controversial than other social media in Japan;[5] they are extremely popular among Japan's extreme right-wing, known as the netto-uyoku, who post xenophobic comments, often targeting Koreans.[9][6] Defamation is of particular concern; by August 2008, Nishimura had received more than one hundred lawsuits for defamatory comments left on the website.[11] Announcements of crimes also have drawn scrutiny towards 2channel and its successors.[13][17][18][19] In 2012, 2channel was accused by the Tokyo Metropolitan Police of allowing its platform to be used by amphetamine dealers,[20] although no charges were filed.[13]

In September 2007, 2channel averaged over 2.4 million posts per day.[21][c] As of July 2020, 5channel had 1,031 boards receiving around 2.7 million posts per day on weekends,[22] with no growth since March 2016.[23][c] Meanwhile, 2ch.sc then had 826 boards receiving around 5,700 posts daily.[24][c]
  Comments:
Opening note: 夏厨, while seeming to have originated in the Japanese 2channel/2chan/2ch community, appears to be in more broad use then "summerfag" is in English, probably because it is inherently less offensive. "summerfag" is largely restricted to a single website/community(4chan.org). Outside of participation in, or discussion of, the website 4chan.org(and some derivatives, I guess), "summerfag" is not an appropriate gloss, and risks being inadvertently both hyper-offensive and not-understood. Unfortunately, I know of no other good English glosses, besides an [expl].

My first ref is an academic text that indexes it as "summerfag (4chan slang)".

See also, for example:
site:twitter.com "summerfag"
vs.
site:reddit.com "summerfag"

Twitter returns almost nothing. Reddit returns lots of results, almost entirely 4chan-related groups. I have included the first non-4chan reddit response, and it was a commenter referencing 4chan.

Then compare with the Japanese term below, which has thousands of hits on twitter (I've removed the username 夏厨系 from searches...):
site:twitter.com 夏厨 -夏厨系

Clearly not the same in tenor. It seems it could even be used light-heartedly in Japanese, and may even be used in the cooking/kitchen sense of 厨. "a cook for the summer". (maybe a sense[2], not sure)

The respective communities (2chan and 4chan) are large enough that I think keeping this entry has merit, but at the same time this use of "fag" without very-relevant provisos is a problem. (this single entry was used to justify the addition of "fag" to the entry 厨, and I'm not so sure that's consistent with the general strength of 厨 in Japanese)

One of the ~6 twitter results, for example, is Japanese and shares an exciting English discovery about "fag". We don't seem to be their source, but this is the kind of thing I thing I would like to see us take more consideration of.

Again, we don't include notes like the one suggested that are usage notes on the English gloss rather than the Japanese word. The point I was making about 2ch is that it's splintered into 5ch and a new 2ch (at a different url from the original) which apparently isn't half as popular as 5ch,so it doesn't really make sense to speak about 2ch any longer.
Please, don't resubmit basically the same edit upon rejection accompanied by another wall of text.

One ref to confirm at least "esp. 4chan". Having looked, I'd say "uncommon outside" is a fair appraisal.
https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/summerfag
(Internet slang, derogatory) A new, inexperienced, and presumably teenage user who joins an online community (especially 4chan) during the American school holidays at summer

Original ref. in 2018 was to "2ch slang". This seems essentially correct.
  Comments:
Thank you for the feedback Marcus. I have definitely gotten comments over time, which I certainly would not deny. Very recent comments, outside of one notable one, I have not caught up with yet. So if there is a flood of perturbed messages, I just haven't seen those yet. That's on me.

Because "fag" is a touchy term that risks offense (why I was trying to edit), I'll try again with something brief: "summerfag" is a term limited to a specific community, 4chan, which has a practice of appending "fag" to a lot of terms. The ref gives 20+ examples. ie.
newfag (new member)
oldfag (long-time member)
samefag (someone who replies to their own posts anonymously)
....

These are generally limited to this community, and not a reflection of general English or even general [net-sl]. This is [4chan-sl]. 夏厨 seems quite a bit more common in general use outside of 2channel than "summerfag" outside of 4chan. Since "fag" risks extreme offense, and since "summerfag" is not well known outside of a specific community, I think warning flags are appropriate.

2ch/2chan/2channel, whatever. Googling "2channel" will work. I didn't realize this was in other entries, any version is fine with me.

Do we need the "IR" glosses? Looks a bit odd having them on every sense and I'm not sure they serve any useful purpose.
Also, should [abbr] tags be used for acronyms? "IR" is not really a shortened form of 統合型リゾート or 赤外線, etc. but rather a completely separate word with the same meaning. I'd argue that it's only an abbreviation in English. I note that the kokugos also don't describe acronyms as abbreviations.

I was surfing ryokan websites yesterday looking at the different meal options and it was obvious the meaning in which they used it
wasn't "an unusual cut of meat (which you won't often see in restaurants, because it's a little odd)" but "the most exclusive piece
(because there's so little of it)!" The way they use it, it's really a "PR word" and if a professional translator got to work on their
sites I really think "we have unusual meat!" would be a poor translation of the actual message the ryokan wants to impart.
Also I think scarcity = exclusivity

"お肉には希少部位と言われる部位があります。希少だからといって、一番美味しいとは限りませんが、どの部位が希少部位なのか知っておくと、お肉を食べる時に役立つでしょう。"
  Comments:
Is "exclusive" the right word? I think I'd go with "unusual".

  Comments:
Also I think this might qualify as "slang" rather than "col"? My understanding of the difference between the two is that "slang"
denotes a word not widely known outside of a specific group/demographic, or only widely known as a word used by a specific
group/demographic, while "col" denotes words more widely known but that might not fit formal texts, etc.

Splitting out from どうでもいい. Really there should be a どうだって良い(よい) entry as well if we were consequential, but my hope
is still that we'll get around to merging all the splits eventually.

Also has similar use to 取扱所 i.e. used on kuroneko's site (for drop off point)
Not sure if they should be two senses or just the one.
