Meaning #8 refers to the entry for 指を詰める, and its meaning "to jam (one's finger in a door, etc.)"; however, that is not the meaning listed on the page for 指を詰める. There it says "to catch one's finger (in a door, etc.)". To "jam" one's finger is something different in English (at least as I've heard it).

I don't think we need the romanization with the macron. "Ronin" is in English dictionaries, [0] and it's strange to have both forms.

[0]: In fact, it's present in the 1913 edition of Webster's.

I feel like it being done in secrete is heavily implied by the word 仮面. You are really a ronin,

Sorry Jim, I did not wish to cause any confusion by my comment on "獲れる", i.e., your reply, "I am afraid you've lost me with "Empty vessels", etc. You'll need to raise those topics under the relevent entries."
I was just trying to somewhat acknowledge that my versions of English may be some what parochial, so to speak, and explain the point by referring to some key words "Empty vessels" from the above. And, then I endorsed that point by referring to "よくしゃべる者はかえって実行しない", which I stated may mean - if I have got it right - that a person who talks well, on the contrary will not perform [carry something out]. And then I stated that it was not quite the same as the cat's meow that alerts the mouse to danger and therefore allows the escape; nor is it quite the empty vessel. Then I concluded with the admission of my parochialism by stating that it is obviously quite difficult to get matches that suit everyone's thinking and in a dictionary it is the majority view that counts.
Sorry to have plagued you with this, but after your comment I thought that I had better complete the circle by returning to the relevant entry as suggested.

I have personally heard somebody say this
to someone in an exasperated voice (the
way they were delivered, I'd call them
fighting words (I did say he muttered them
in my last comment but that wasn't really
it)) but it does seem like that's not the
most typical usage. But I guess "your
mother would be ashamed" was wrong,
because really it's a (pretty grave)
insult directed towards the parents, not
the child. The current glosses don't
really convey the 悪意, though. Maybe we
ought to make it something more akin to
"what parents would bring up a kid like
this"?

  Comments:
As part of my kanji studies, I'm currently stumbling through random passages in jmdict, with an eye towards keeping idioms that seem interesting and recognizable. As such, I do some basic google searches to see if there is any actual use in the wild.

Every single google search result for the quoted entry "宝は湧き物" is a dictionary entry. The pair of youtube entries are dictionary entries. The images are dictionary entries. 2 of 4 search results were posted by random_kotowaza-bot, a 3rd was a straight en-jp definition.

It seems like there is a historical source, as this appears in j-j entries with デジタル大辞泉 is listed as a reference. If this were vocabulary, I'd suggest [rare] or [obs]. Since the editorial policy wiki indicates that this dictionary is not a repository for arbitrary idioms and proverbs, instead allowing items that are "short, pithy passages which are recognized as useful" I suggest deleting it.

The danger of this entry existing is that "fortune comes to those who seek it" is super-catchy in English, while the proverb itself seems essentially unknown. I tried it on two Japanese students today, they had to google it.

Just to complicate slightly, there are two variants of this idiom, using 金 and 金銀 in place of 宝。 Neither of those appears in this dictionary. 金は湧き物 seems to at least exist in the wild, but is still rare. The kicker is that the reported meanings of the other two are at odds with this one (see references for Japanese definitions).
宝は湧き物: If you seek out money, you'll find it.
金銀は湧き物: If you don't work too hard, money will find its way to you naturally.
金は湧き物: If you don't think about it, even if you have no money, money will come to you.

Seems like I tracked down the source for the 金銀 variant in any case...

 34,700 習うより慣れよ
  Comments:
Add form 習うより慣れろ (〜ろ, not 〜よ) – grammatically modern
command form, much more common in practice (a friend used it
in the 〜ろ form).
(Could have a separate entry; don’t know policy on this.)
Also add other glosses; “experience is the best teacher”
seems the closest English form (implying experience better
than study).

When in doubt, go with consistency I suppose... The following all have glosses of "the apple doesn't fall far from the tree":
この母にしてこの子あり
この親にしてこの子あり
瓜の蔓に茄子はならぬ
蛙の子は蛙

"the apple doesn't fall", following google's rough estimates, is 5~10x more common than either variant previously here.

I get that we generally avoid contractions, but in this case it appears to be idiomatic.

I read the past discussion on wording. This is one of these idiom common-to-uncommon mismatches where we'd arguably be better off giving a meaning "children take after their parents", and offering no analogous idiom whatsover(let alone two minor variants). This mapping leads to this kind of silliness:

https://twitter.com/joyokanji/status/843862108731187200
"In Jp, “The apple never falls far from the tree” becomes 狐の子は頬白 (fox pups have white cheeks). "

Except not really, because this expression seems to border on nonexistent in Japanese.

I like the entry as an example, but I wonder how it won the lottery to get in here. The gloss for ごもっとも is basically synonymous, 至極 is just an intensifier, and we don't have any of these more common entries(from the top-100 至極): (perhaps we might add one or two, or buff up the 至極 entry?)

I mean, we don't have this, which is evidently the exact same minus the keigo ご:
至極もっとも	8130

至極当然	62145
