Refs: | The current definition doesn't seem to give much indication that 映像 commonly refers to video. There's just "clip" at the end of the definition, but that's perhaps confusing because that would seem to be a distinct sense – the other glosses mostly sound like still images, but "clip" is given in the definition as just another gloss for the same sense. "video recording" is from Genius WaEi "image in one's mind" is from Kojien: 頭の中に浮かんだ、ものの姿 Here are some examples from http://eow.alc.co.jp//EUC-JP/ . 映像、活字、音楽のマルチメディア作戦で大ヒットさせたのです。 His multi-media strategy of film, printing, and music, made the movie a great hit. 映像 footage 映像に映っていた_人の人物 __ people spotted on the footage 映像の中の男性 man in a video 映像の送波 video transmission 映像の特殊効果をつくり出す工程は、私には魅力的だ。 The process of creating special video effects is fascinating to me. 映像をスローモーションで見る watch a picture in slow motion 映像を共有する video-sharing 映像を利用する use footage 映像を含むブログ video weblog 映像コーデック video codec《コ》 |

|
Comments: | I see on 2846304 a comment by Jim Breen that there was an abandoned attempt to merge these two entries. (そうこん 爪痕). I don't have a strong opinion on merging them or not, but this seems to have left an odd situation. 1. The most common reading of 爪痕 appears to actually be つめあと. But if you look up 爪痕 by kanji in this dictionary, you now get an entry with only one reading そうこん, and a reference to this entry, where 爪痕 is a *secondary* reading of つめあと. 2. 爪痕 appears to be the most common kanji for つめあと, not 爪跡. My modern dictionary, for example, *only* gives 爪痕, and does not even contain an entry for the reading "そうこん". Beyond my one dictionary reference, you need only google 爪痕 to see that つめあと is the most common reading. The n-grams already cited here support this interpretation (granted a confounding factor from そうこん). I'm submitting a parallel change to the other entry that I think reconciles things "well enough" without merging the two entries. Mark そうこん as [form], reference this entry using the same kanji 爪痕, re-order the kanji in this entry so that 爪痕 is the most common entry. Provide a back reference from this entry to the other to identify the existence of the literary form. |

Comments: | I capitalised "Clione" because I assumed it did refer to the genus (in addition to the species Clione limacina). I realise now that can't be right (because there's no 属 after クリオネ). That being said, I'm still not sure what クリオネ actually refers to. The jwiki article suggests it's a common name for species of genus Clione, but according to daijr, it *only* refers to Clione limacina, in which case the gloss should be "common clione". Even if Wikipedia is correct, I'm not seeing any evidence that "Clione" refers to anything other than the genus. It appears to be always capitalised. |
|
3. | A 2018-09-23 18:18:12 Rene Malenfant <...address hidden...> | |
Comments: | if capitalized, it commits a category error. "Clione" refers to a genus (i.e., it's the proper name of a taxon; in Japanese, クリオネ属) not to individual organisms that belong to the genus. at best, they would be "cliones" (uncapitalized), assuming that this genus name is in fact used as the common name of the organisms. the original uncapitalized gloss was correct. also, the gloss should not say it refers to the genus, since the genus name in Japanese is クリオネ属. this is a member of the genus |

Comments: | I've been reading up on "zither" and it seems it's very widely used for plucked string instruments. Although "zither" is German it's from a Greek root; in fact the same root as "guitar". And it's used widely as a family name, so I guess I'll just have to accept it. "zither-like instrument" is too clumsy. |
