Do we really want to tag かわゆい as outdated? I've seen it and I think also heard it used plenty of times. Daij both use an

I have personally heard somebody say this 
to someone in an exasperated voice (the 
way they were delivered, I'd call them 
fighting words (I did say he muttered them 
in my last comment but that wasn't really 
it)) but it does seem like that's not the 
most typical usage. But I guess "your 
mother would be ashamed" was wrong, 
because really it's a (pretty grave) 
insult directed towards the parents, not 
the child. The current glosses don't 
really convey the 悪意, though. Maybe we 
ought to make it something more akin to 
"what parents would bring up a kid like 
this"?

I see what you're saying but I think these expressions are used in pretty much the same way. I note that 言うは易く行うは難し is a very common translation of "easier said than done" online.

I prefer "since". Makes it clear that it includes Japanese up to the present day.
For sense 2, Wikipedia says "明治維新を中心に、江戸後期・幕末から明治初中期". Daijr gives the period as "明治期あるいは明治・大正期" but also says "さらに幕末期を含めていうこともある". Not sure how we want to gloss it.

I think we should do both. Daijs, daijr and prog all use "健康のバロメーター" in their example sentences for this 2nd sense
