1. [unc]

I think we're now only using the [expl] tag for "untranslatable" Japanese words that are glossed with transliterations.
It doesn't seem necessary for [unc] entries.

If the display of an entry in the database WWW page has:
  <= headword, etc.
it means that the indicated entry has a cross-reference TO the entry you are viewing. It is
purely informational.
=> means there is a cross-reference FROM this entry.
<=> means there are cross-references in both directions.
There is no actual automatic cross-referencing.

https://jisho.org/word/ヽ (no back-references visible without explicit back-ref included in ヽ entry data)
  Comments:
Just a little house-keeping tidy up. Adding back-references to 2213380・一の字点, so that people can find all related kana repetition marks from a single one.

[To be explicit: Jisho.org does not seem to implement automatic generation of back-references, so while you can find ヽ from 一の字点 (since ref is in 一の字点 data), you can't automatically find 一の字点 from ヽ (since back-ref not explicitly in ヽ data).

After checking confirmation page, I notice that there are two 'See also' links on that page, one of which is the one I just added, and the other seems to be automatically generated by this JMDICT software (but it is not actually included in the data entry for ヽ). This indicates to me that the local JMDICT software automatically generates such references, but *not* in the data, leaving such automatic back-referencing to be re-implemented in any software that uses JMDICT data.

So, I wonder, what is the current policy for how to handle such automatic vs. manual cross-referencing/back-referencing?

Has it been decided that client software should implement their own back-referencing, and so manual back-references should be avoided?

Or, has it been decided that manual back-referencing is optional; allowed, but not automatically supported? Or is it encouraged? Or has there not yet been a discussion/consensus on this? Just hoping for some sort of guidance here.

Instead of going ahead with multiple edits to other entries, along the same lines, I'll await a response on this one to see what policy I should be following. Cheers!]

1000020 (ゝ) Discussion resolution.
  Comments:
Changed from [n] to [unc] to match with discussion resolution in 1000020 (ゝ). Since I was trying to add this to my IME (Windows 10, Japanese language pack), I checked Jisho (using JMDICT data) to see what part of speech to use; but 'noun' just didn't seem right. Checking 1000020 (ゝ) gave [unc] which seemed at least more reasonable, if incomplete.

Maybe there is some classification for 'special symbol' that I don't know about? Is 字点 a 'part of speech'?

Quite happy to lose all those other dubious readings, but why not just gloss it as "kanji iteration mark"?
2. A* 2018-01-30 12:06:10  Robin Scott <...address hidden...>
  Comments:
Technically speaking, I don't think this has a reading. どうのじてん (同の字点) and のま are both names. The other "readings" are just ways of calling up the symbol in an IME.
We had a discussion about these types of symbols a few months back (entry 1000020) and agreed to drop readings altogether but oddly, 々 has to go in the kanji field, whereas whereas ゝ,ゞ,ヽ, and ヾ have to go in the reading field.
Therefore, in order to keep this we need a reading.
I'd go with のま/ノマ only, given that we have an actual source for it.
I don't think we need "noma" as a gloss.

"In the recent book Nihon eigha ha, ima (Japanese film
today), Sano Shinichi dedicates an engaging chapter to
the fifty-year history of Japanese pornographic film and
video. The industry emerged in the late 1940s and boomed
in the early 1950s. First there was blue film, a rag-tag
operation of amateurs and misfits that produced twenty-
minute shorts. Blue film was followed by pink film,
which produced soft-porn sponsored by the major film
companies to offset the loss of revenue from declining
ticket sales brought about by the popularity of
television. ... Sano's blue-pink-adult trajectory offers
a good start at historicizing the links among the three
dominant moments of pornography."

Hm. I should point out I did find a handful of entries
in daijr which are read -さん but given as -様, namely
いとさん【愛様・幼様】 (ksb)
はばかりさん【憚り様】(ksb)
てきさん【敵様】(arch) (also in daijs)
I still think we should split though because -様 for
-さん is definitely archaic and only relatively modern in
ksb, at best. It's a strenuous connection for a merge
esp. as it's in nikk alone - we don't merge entries
based on nikk's lack of okurigana, for example.

Maybe I'm being overzealous here but I think notes on usage
should be notes, not glosses. The actual glosses I've added
aren't great, though. I think maybe we should consider
implementing the chujiten/prog model where some words don't

But it isn't, not here, not since we decided to simplify the readings. The reading of ダメ is だめ. Wadoku similarly provides hiragana readings for katakana (iirc). I think it's the best and most predictable approach.

Meikyo has sense 2 under 嫌/いや. I think that's a better place for it. I've included it in an amendment to 1587610.
Dropping the sense restriction as I see there are いやあ/いやー sentences for that sense.

"It is not always easy to pin down the precise
meaning of words that are just entering the
language. The kanji 卍 (manji)—picked as a
runner-up by Sanseidō—is an ancient religious
symbol, but has recently become highly popular
among Japanese teens with a new signification.
It was apparently first used as an intensifier
like maji (“really” or “totally”) and is often
seen in the form maji manji. Later, manji span
off into meanings like “really good,” “really
bad,” and so many other variations that the
Sanseidō judges gave up on the task of coming
up with a definition. One questioned whether
the people using it even knew what it meant."

I tried looking at how this is actually used
on twitter but it wasn't super helpful. I saw
several cases where it could be read as
"really?" but it's all open to interpretation.
Maybe this should be something like "kewl" or
"awes" or just "wow".

i ran this past a friend who is half-japanese and was raised bilingual and i asked him that if a woman said いやあん in a sexual context would it be considered "light-hearted/flirtatious", and after a bit of back and forth, his final comment was "i'm not kidding, there is a rape element to iyan." he's not the type to throw that around lightly

I'd like to think about that for a bit. It has implications for users, as the dot/non-dot versions should be available to users of the XML and text versions.

  Comments:
Might it be possible to automatically, when creating the
jmdict/jmnedict files, to take all entries with at least
one nakaguro reading and create an additional non-
nakaguro reading for any nakaguro reading? Then we'd
only have to do one reading, e.g. "ブルーノ・マーズ". A
whole bunch of two+ word gairaigo entries would end up a
lot clenaer too. I don't know how feasible it'd be, but
it might be worth exploring?

  Comments:
probably should have both, yes. we're consistent in the main dictionary about it. lots of backlogged work to do if we adopt this in enamdict though

  Comments:
I think we can have both. Makes text searching easier. There are quite a few where we have both versions in the one entry, and plenty where they are split and could be combined, e.g. アーネストヘミングウェイ.
3. A* 2018-01-31 08:00:11  Marcus Richert <...address hidden...>
  Comments:
We don't have the nakaguro on a lot of other person entries
in jmnedict (Obama, Trump, Putin). For consistency it
should be one or the other - which one/other?

[unc] is for jmdict only.
Also, I think it needs to be noted that this is just a joke name/nickname.

It may be popular but so are plenty of nicknames for brands and people. I don't think this sort of thing should go in the main dictionary.
