1. [unc]

I think we're now only using the [expl] tag for "untranslatable" Japanese words that are glossed with transliterations.
It doesn't seem necessary for [unc] entries.

If the display of an entry in the database WWW page has:
  <= headword, etc.
it means that the indicated entry has a cross-reference TO the entry you are viewing. It is
purely informational.
=> means there is a cross-reference FROM this entry.
<=> means there are cross-references in both directions.
There is no actual automatic cross-referencing.

https://jisho.org/word/ヽ (no back-references visible without explicit back-ref included in ヽ entry data)
  Comments:
Just a little house-keeping tidy up. Adding back-references to 2213380・一の字点, so that people can find all related kana repetition marks from a single one.

[To be explicit: Jisho.org does not seem to implement automatic generation of back-references, so while you can find ヽ from 一の字点 (since ref is in 一の字点 data), you can't automatically find 一の字点 from ヽ (since back-ref not explicitly in ヽ data).

After checking confirmation page, I notice that there are two 'See also' links on that page, one of which is the one I just added, and the other seems to be automatically generated by this JMDICT software (but it is not actually included in the data entry for ヽ). This indicates to me that the local JMDICT software automatically generates such references, but *not* in the data, leaving such automatic back-referencing to be re-implemented in any software that uses JMDICT data.

So, I wonder, what is the current policy for how to handle such automatic vs. manual cross-referencing/back-referencing?

Has it been decided that client software should implement their own back-referencing, and so manual back-references should be avoided?

Or, has it been decided that manual back-referencing is optional; allowed, but not automatically supported? Or is it encouraged? Or has there not yet been a discussion/consensus on this? Just hoping for some sort of guidance here.

Instead of going ahead with multiple edits to other entries, along the same lines, I'll await a response on this one to see what policy I should be following. Cheers!]

1000020 (ゝ) Discussion resolution.
  Comments:
Changed from [n] to [unc] to match with discussion resolution in 1000020 (ゝ). Since I was trying to add this to my IME (Windows 10, Japanese language pack), I checked Jisho (using JMDICT data) to see what part of speech to use; but 'noun' just didn't seem right. Checking 1000020 (ゝ) gave [unc] which seemed at least more reasonable, if incomplete.

Maybe there is some classification for 'special symbol' that I don't know about? Is 字点 a 'part of speech'?

Quite happy to lose all those other dubious readings, but why not just gloss it as "kanji iteration mark"?
2. A* 2018-01-30 12:06:10  Robin Scott <...address hidden...>
  Comments:
Technically speaking, I don't think this has a reading. どうのじてん (同の字点) and のま are both names. The other "readings" are just ways of calling up the symbol in an IME.
We had a discussion about these types of symbols a few months back (entry 1000020) and agreed to drop readings altogether but oddly, 々 has to go in the kanji field, whereas whereas ゝ,ゞ,ヽ, and ヾ have to go in the reading field.
Therefore, in order to keep this we need a reading.
I'd go with のま/ノマ only, given that we have an actual source for it.
I don't think we need "noma" as a gloss.

"to serve" means "To set down (food or drink) on the table to be eaten; to bring (food, drink) to a person." [wiktionary]
the kokugos say this is the act of filling a plate, not bringing food.
I frankly do not see any reason why this has "to serve" let alone first.

I've seen 盛る used for filling an inflatable beach toy with air.
Before Robin's last edit, that was covered by sense 2.
Now it's missing.
We could either follow gg5 and put "fill up" back in sense 2,
or we could follow daijs and make sense 1 less food specific.

Yes, my 1930s GG1(?) has "silent contempt". I agree the "No comment. We need more time" is poor. "Shunning" is a bit problematic too, although it may just work in some contexts.

  Comments:
Maybe the "contempt" bit is slightly more loaded than it has to be but I'm not really sure the New York Times article is on the ball
here. Based on the kokugo's/wa-ei definitions, I have a hard time understanding how something like "黙殺します" could be interpreted to
mean "No comment. We need more time." Googling a little for 鈴木貫太郎 黙殺 it seems that the issue might really have been a poor choice
of words on behalf of Suzuki (or the media describing the government's position?) rather than an actual bonafide mistranslation. The
whole story has the feels of an urban legend (though I could be wrong).
_
Looking at the examples in GG5 and prog especially, I don't see much of an issue with "shunning", if it's towards the end of the entry.

"It is not always easy to pin down the precise
meaning of words that are just entering the
language. The kanji 卍 (manji)—picked as a
runner-up by Sanseidō—is an ancient religious
symbol, but has recently become highly popular
among Japanese teens with a new signification.
It was apparently first used as an intensifier
like maji (“really” or “totally”) and is often
seen in the form maji manji. Later, manji span
off into meanings like “really good,” “really
bad,” and so many other variations that the
Sanseidō judges gave up on the task of coming
up with a definition. One questioned whether
the people using it even knew what it meant."

I tried looking at how this is actually used
on twitter but it wasn't super helpful. I saw
several cases where it could be read as
"really?" but it's all open to interpretation.
Maybe this should be something like "kewl" or
"awes" or just "wow".

Robin said in a fork: "Comments:

uses LINE."

I think it's because the word 未読/有読
appear under the chat bubbles in LINE,
which they don't in Facebook's Messenger,
for example.
8. A* 2019-06-21 15:31:43  Nicolas Maia
  Comments:
I think results are going to be skewed towards LINE simply because it's pretty much the only messaging app they use, but that doesn't mean this entry should restrict itself to one app name. If this word is used for any other platform, the gloss immediately becomes obsolete and incorrect. I just see no value in specifying one single app.
