2. | A* 2023-04-13 15:06:56 Brian Krznarich <...address hidden...> | |
Refs: | Image search. Wikipedia on 拳銃. Majority of wikipedia images are not revolvers. Great majority of google image hits are not revolvers. reverso for 拳銃: mostly "gun" and "handgun". Limited to "revolver matches", context is provided directly (回転式拳銃) or indirectly (historical identification of a specific manufacturer's weapon) https://context.reverso.net/translation/japanese-english/拳銃#revolver one "revolver" example: リボルバー拳銃 another: 回転式拳銃 3rd: 6連発拳銃 six-shot revolvers. 4th: リボルバー拳銃 5th: 4口径のベルギー製ブリティッシュ・ブルドッグは1881年7月2日のチャールズ・J・ギトーによるジェームズ・ガーフィールド米大統領暗殺に使用された拳銃としても知られる。 A. calibre Belgian-made British Bulldog revolver was used to assassinate US President James Garfield on 2 July 1881 by Charles Guiteau. And as with example 5, keep in mind that E->J translators are free to turn "revolver" into "handgun" if it suits them. |
|
Comments: | "Handgun" is a very broad category, and in modern times *most* 拳銃 are not revolvers. 拳銃 should not be turned into a "revolver" unless that is otherwise made explicit to the translator by context. (回転式拳銃, レボルバー, and some other more niche terms can be used if "revolver" is intended"). In the E->J direction, which is a secondary concern, translating "revolver" to 拳銃 just throws away information. There are very common equivalents available for "revolver". This is quite the translation from reverso: Mk VI Revolverを除き、拳銃は全般的に12m以上の距離での性能が増しています。 With the exception of the Mark VI Revolver, Pistols are now generally better options for distances beyond 12 m. 拳銃 = pistols 拳銃 is treated as a category the completely excludes revolvers. (one specific revolver being able to stand up to modern pistols) Not saying that's completely technically accurate, but it does emphasize that "revolver" is not a good gloss here. |

Comments: | Bear in mind it's a proverb. I don't think a language learner should be worrying too much about the literal meaning of the Japanese, much less agonizing over any ellipsis. We have plenty of expressions where we also give a "lit" Japanese version, and I'd hate to see the English mangled just to make it more 直訳. |

Comments: | I have not changed the above. My thoughts were triggered by the fact that in some text the above expression is followed by "です" or "だ"; plus also sometimes an exphasis, etc., e.g., "な". What I was thinking is this: that the parts in the meanings above which turn the expression into a complete statement should be included in brackets, e.g., [lit] even if (it's) rotten, (it's still) sea bream. I am stating this because when the meaning is preceded by the concept of "the literal meaning", namely; upholding the exact or primary meaning of a word or words, the inclusion of "it's" and "it's still" seems to be incorrect. I don't wish to become the pedant, but I am thinking that the novice may be deviated from the true concept of such an expression when trying to balance literal meaning of the Japanes head-word with the meaning given following the prefix [lit]. I think that I would like to see such an entry for the meaning of such expressions set out something like this: "[this expression is idiomatically usually used simply as 'くさってもたい' and conveys the meaning of] something that is not what it once was but it is still high class; quality is quality; [lit] even if (it's) rotten, (it's still) sea bream. |

Comments: | I won't lose any sleep if it's kept but I'm with Marcus on this one. If every use of a word is accompanied by an explanation of its meaning, it's not a real Japanese word. There are plenty of English language articles that mention 和製英語 terms but you won't find them in an English dictionary unless they're used in English (e.g. salaryman). I think we should apply the same standard here with 英製和語 terms. |

|
Comments: | 6 years later but I've got to say it's still obvious to me that this shouldn't be an entry. It's demonstrably not a Japanese word -- only an English one. As far as Google can tell us, it was only ever used by English speakers in English in Japan, never in Japanese by Japanese speakers, outside of an extremely limited amount of commenting on said usage by English speakers in Japan. I'm not saying (and wasn't saying) that it couldn't be possible for a reverse 和製英語 (英製和語?) thing to happen where a word minted by foreigners in Japan ends up entering the Japanese language - I'm just saying it clearly didn't happen here. The usage of the word among non-Japanese was merely *discussed* in Japanese. That doesn't mean it was ever *used* in Japanese. |
