Comments: | Sorry, I mistook the edit for a new submission and didn't notice that ユーロクラート was in GG5. When a katakana-ized word of foreign origin isn't listed in any of the usual references, a low hit count on Google is generally a good indication that the word has not truly entered the Japanese language. Had it not been in GG5 I would have argued for its deletion. ユーロクラート is the more common form. Swapping order. |

Comments: | I didn't see the rejection. Both versions of this term are in references, so I would consider it acceptable. |

1. | A* 2017-08-11 16:39:54 Scott | |
Comments: | ユーロクラート was rejected by Robin because "Neither form gets more than a few hundreds hits on Google. I don't think the term is widespread enough to be considered a Japanese word." In that case, shouldn't we then either accept both variants or reject both and delete the entry? This revives the debate of what words we should accept. It does come with an explanation most of the time, but not all of the time. (e.g. http://geo-g.com/05records/contents/geo/records/1996/0713/index.htm or http://www5.cao.go.jp/keizai3/sekaikeizaiwp/wp-we71/wp-we71-00205.html). The last one is a cabinet office report so it's not some obscure website. There are actually dozens of examples. IMO, we have been inclusive in the past. Some technical words in Edict are only used once or twice on the Internet. (And I think that's right approach since only a portion of the language is represented on the Internet.) My understanding is that we didn't try to be normative and accepted every word that was actually being used. So, I would argue once more for its inclusion. |
