Comments: | The kanji 引 has the readings ひ.く, ひ.き, ひ.き-, -び.き, ひ.ける I propose ひ.く, ひ.ける or ひ.く, ひ.ける, ひき instead. -- There is no need for ひ.き. The word 引き is just the masu-stem of 引く, not a noun in its own right. (Unlike say 匂: にお.う, にお.い) Obviously no need for ひ.き-. No need for -び.き ether. We normally don't include rendaku as separate readings. ---- One could make a case for ひき (as in 取引) as a separate reading. On the other hand, it is quite common to omit okurigana on masu-stems in compound words. I'd be happy to go either way here. |

Comments: | I agree. As 曳く, 牽く and 抽く are rare, I don't think it's worth splitting them out either. |
|
16. | A* 2023-12-10 02:58:40 Jim Breen <...address hidden...> | |
Comments: | The 引く/ひく extended family is always a bit of a problem as no two references agree on either the range of possible surface forms or the division of the senses. 明鏡 has just 引く, Nikkoku has 9 possible forms, and others are somewhere in between. GG5 has a solo 引く entry (11 senses) and a 引く/退く entry with 4 senses. We separate 退く, 惹く and 弾く into their own entries with mutual xrefs. I find this proposed amendment by アノンさん a bit messy, with its restrictions on all 19 senses. I'm not convinced the restrictions are really needed but I think a better solution would be to move 曳く, 牽く and 抽く to their own entries with mutual xrefs (as with the other 3 forms) and cut back the restrictions. |

Comments: | Request to add "fall back" / "retreat" Just saw やり合う時間はねえぜ。ひくぞ translated as "we don't have time to fight. let's retreat" before jumping out of a window in a 2-on-2 confrontation. Either this sense is independent of [17], or it would seem that "retreat"/"fall back" should be added to it, and possibly to the matching standalone entry for 退く. Note the Japanese kenkyuusha ref specifically identifies the sense as 後退する, for which we already have: 後退: retreat; falling back; moving backwards; reversing; backing up (of a vehicle); retrogression; retraction None of "let's draw back" "let's recede" or "let's move back" could have functioned in this context, the last of those being almost-but-not-quite there. |

Comments: | 処分 = "punishment" nuance here,I think. it is the example in sankoku's 退学 entry. On reverso, 退学 is predominantly [1], 退学処分 is unambiguous. sankoku does not give [3] at all, says explicitly 途中でやめ. Wikipedia also says 卒業・修了を待たずに学校を途中でやめること [3] seems like it would be an uncommon usage, given the nuance involved in [1] and [2]. Also, dropped from modern dictionary (sankoku). It's obviously literally correct for A+B reasons, 退+学, but unlikely to be common in this day and age. (marking [rare] or [hist] or [dated] explains that 退学 is not as ambiguous as the 3 senses might otherwise indicate). |

Comments: | I wish we could get some usage comparisons. I think it's a bit more that just a juxtaposition of もし and よかったら, so let's add it. |
|

Comments: | We already have よかったら as an entry (1554530) so I'm not sure this really adds anything. |

Comments: | kotowaza-allguide has 欲の熊鷹股裂くる 【読み】 よくのくまたかまたさける the reading is さける, not さくる. Not sure if it's a typo or an archaic reading. Either way, daij both have "裂く" so let's go with that instead. |
