Comments: | 処分 = "punishment" nuance here,I think. it is the example in sankoku's 退学 entry. On reverso, 退学 is predominantly [1], 退学処分 is unambiguous. sankoku does not give [3] at all, says explicitly 途中でやめ. Wikipedia also says 卒業・修了を待たずに学校を途中でやめること [3] seems like it would be an uncommon usage, given the nuance involved in [1] and [2]. Also, dropped from modern dictionary (sankoku). It's obviously literally correct for A+B reasons, 退+学, but unlikely to be common in this day and age. (marking [rare] or [hist] or [dated] explains that 退学 is not as ambiguous as the 3 senses might otherwise indicate). |

Comments: | it simply isn't true that it is usually written in kana. there are a huge number of words in the dictionary (and in Japanese in general) that share a headword with another term and therefore require some disambiguation on the part of the writer or reader. to say that they are "usually written in kana" when they are not is to make the [uk] tag meaningless = Use the "Restrict to common words" option. |

Comments: | The above article has いっそうのこと as the reading for 一層の事. How often, if at all, is 一層 read as いっそ in this expression? My IME doesn't even suggest 一層 for いっそ. We removed all mention of 一層 from the いっそ entry (see my comment there). If 一層のこと is always read いっそうのこと, I suggest splitting out 一層の事/いっそうのこと into a separate entry with a "non-standard var. of いっそのこと" note. |
