Comments: | I was probably the source of the "adj-no". The update records don't show anything. I've gone through heaps of Googled examples of 招集の and I must say I've not found anything really adjectival. I think it can safely be dropped. The discussion of "adj-no" in general can happen elsewhere. |
|
7. | A* 2017-08-08 01:48:49 Scott | |
Comments: | Just one last thing. We define adj-no in the help file as "nouns which may take the genitive case particle `no'" but isn't that every noun? e.g. スコットの車 (non-vs) "要求の変更" "運転の経験" (vs). And I found someone who agrees with me!: "As I understand it, the term “no-adjective” simply means “nouns which are typically translated to adjectives in English and other languages.” If we treat Japanese as a language in its own right, distinguishing them from nouns as different parts-of-speech is completely artificial. The particle の makes a modifier of a noun. The exact relationship between the modifier and the modified noun can be almost anything; Daijisen lists fourteen relationships such as ownership, belonging, location of existence, location of action, time, and so on, and one of them is “attribute and condition.”" https://japanese.stackexchange.com/questions/2770/so-called-の-adjectives-how-does-の-really-work So maybe the solution is getting rid of the tag adj-no altogether. |

Comments: | >There's no evidence because it's impossible to provide any. I can't prove the non-existence of an [adj-no] form with a Google search - 招集の still gets plenty of hits. I can't help pointing out that this is an example of a probatio diabolica or 悪魔の証明 which I added as an entry a few days ago ;) Concerning the main point of the debate, I wonder if adj-no is something that's recognized by other dictionaries and defined precisely. There's a controversy whether "Na-adjectives" (形容動詞) even exist. According to some, they're just 名詞 (nouns). I wonder how useful adj-no is as a category, though I may be missing something. I find examples like: "招集の理日": the reason for the convocation, "招集の通知": the notice for the meeting, 招集の請求: the application for the meeting/convocation. But that's the kind of construction that would apply to any "vs"(ーする) noun. So, I wonder what defines "adj-no". Is there even such a category? Just some thoughts. Cheers, |

Comments: | The problem isn't limited to Eijiro and I want to discuss the [adj-no] tag more generally so I will be posting to the (editors) mailing list. >> you have proposed removing something that is currently in JEdict (and eijiro) with no evidence other than the unreferenced statement "not [adj-no]". There's no evidence because it's impossible to provide any. I can't prove the non-existence of an [adj-no] form with a Google search - 招集の still gets plenty of hits. When the adjectival form is expressed as [noun]的 or [noun]した I point it out but here there's no adjectival form at all. I think fellow editors understand that there's an an implicit "I searched for examples of [adj-no] usage but couldn't find any" embedded in a comment like "not [adj-no]". I've explained my reasoning for these edits in the past and have since removed dozens of [adj-no] tags without objection. In most cases it's self-evident these nouns don't function as adjectives and that Eijiro is the only reason the tag was added. But I'm happy to add "[Eijiro only]" to my comments in future if it makes things clearer. |
