Refs: | [2] is identified as a secondary, not-very-well-known meaning https://oggi.jp/6277173 「懇意(こんい)」には、あまり知られていないもう一つの意味があります。 "close relationship" comes up a few times. Saying "close friendship" might be saying a bit too much. https://context.reverso.net/translation/japanese-english/懇意 |
Comments: | "kindness" did not seem to fit the others in [1]. After searching, seems there is a distinct sense in the kokugos, so I have split. Not confident on what to do with [2] because it's hard to find clear examples of. wiktionary just says "親切", kokugos say 親切な心. [2] seems absent from sankoku, wiktionary marks 古用法. First reference likens to 「親切な気持ち」や「好意」, I've xrefed the latter. [dated] suggests old-fashioned, this seems to be no longer in use, in favor of a different common meaning, so I've guessed [obs]. For [1], seems like the usual collocation is ~にしている, but we don't have that one. ("to be on intimate terms with", rather than "become close friends with"). Might be worth adding, in eijiro: ~と懇意にしている be on friendly terms with 人)と懇意にしている have a close friendship with be on familiar terms with |

Comments: | I'm not sure how authoritative that site is. When terms have low counts and are not in the main 国語s I think we need a bit of caution. The "obsc" is a good idea. |

Refs: | https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Appellation https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Châteauneuf-du-Pape_AOC |
Comments: | It's not a brand. It is an appelation, i.e. it denotes the region where the wine is made. The French appelation system is quite complex with 15 main regions (Bourdeaux, Bourgogne, Champagne, Jura, ...), and many sub-regions and sub-sub-regions. Châteauneuf-du-Pape is a sub-region of the Rhône wine region. It is one of the most famous appelations. |
4. | A* 2017-06-30 12:17:11 Jim Breen <...address hidden...> | |
Comments: | I agree; it's a place name and a brand of wine (we opened a bottle recently for a birthday.) I think it's OK having grape varieties here, along with regional terms like champagne and burgundy, but not specific wine labels. |
