Comments: | I didn't notice this when last year's split happened, but all 28 Tatoeba sentences using 仮に are for the supposing/even-if sense. I see ルミナス leads with that sense, and I propose to reverse them to match what seems to be the more common usage. |

Comments: | Certainly not within the dictionary. It would be stretching things to have conjugations listed separately. In a morphologically heavy language like Japanese, where most of the verbs are very regular, I can't see any need for it. I could potentially do it in WWWJDIC, but I have chosen not to. The exception is in the Text Glossing, where it is done by invoking rules. If you put in "乗っ取れる", it says: Possible inflected verb or adjective: (potential or imperative) 乗っ取る 乗っ取る(P); 乗っとる 【のっとる】 (v5r,vt) to capture ... I think that's about as far as one can go. |

Comments: | In that case, it's worth noting that 536 of these already got removed, and usually the reason was low number of google hits which was interpreted as the term being "edictism". There may have been false positives, since many of these terms are so obscure even googling the term in english gives couple dozens of hits. In this case we have 65 google hits for term "return to zero recording", mostly dictionaries and a couple of legit hits: a patent from 50s and couple of engineering papers from the late 50s/early 60s. It would be great if we had an engineer here who could help us with this matter. |

Comments: | Except where they are plain wrong I'm reluctant to turf out all these oldish computer/comms terms. Many came from a collection I'd called "compdic" which had been compiled from several Japanese sources, including a major JIS standard on terminology. A lot covered the pre-Internet OSI communications terminology, which not surprisingly has never made it into the WWW to a significant extent. In 2008, after quite a bit of discussion, we decided to roll all of "compdic" into JMdict and prune/edit as necessary. We've been doing that, but I think holding old terms is a good idea, and too much of a "low-WWW hits, therefore delete" policy diminishes the value of it all. |

Refs: | GG5 (新和英大辞典第5版) has an entry for パソ通 which simply poinst to its パソコン通信 entry, which is what it does for abbreviations. That entry simply has "online communications", which I agree is a bit vague. |
|
Comments: | We try and keep the entries for the full term and abbreviations aligned. I'm changing this to match the latest for パソコン通信. I think the pre-Internet additions should make it clearer. The original "online correspondence" didn't mean much to me, and I worked in communications right through those periods. |

The friend's name is ピリル. え?なんでそんな会ったこともない外国の女の子と友達になったかって? そいつは、つまりパソコン通信で知り合いになったからだ。パソ通ってヤツだね。もっちろん!おれは英語も赤点、国語すらダメっぴーの立派な現代ッコだ。 したがって、トーゼン天才のピリルが日本語で通信してくれたわけだけどね。 Sample 2: ピリルが日本に来るってパソ通で言って来たのは、ほんの2日前のことだった。 Sample 3: Situation: The main character has just met the girl. This is the girl's line. 「はじめまして。たくさんパソ通じゃお話ししたけど、お会いするのは初めてね。」 |

Comments: | Forgive me for butting back in, but I noticed that you changed the translation I gave. Which is fine, but the way it turned out looks frankly speaking highly ambiguous. If I saw such a translation, I would not know what it might refer to. I gathered three samples I saw in the game. They are quoted above. The game does not elaborate more than that, but it is clear that this word is used to mean some sort of online pen-pal method. If I search Google, I find many references to the word パソ通時代 which I believe might be analog to the English phrase "in the BBS days", and perhaps insinuates that this パソコン通信 thing existed before the popularization of the World Wide Web. In my searches, I also fond these two URLs on the difference of パソコン通信 and Internet: https://detail.chiebukuro.yahoo.co.jp/qa/question_detail/q1447710624 http://dic.nicovideo.jp/a/パソコン通信 I am too young to have properly experienced the pre-WWW days personally so these are just guesses. I hope this is helpful. |
