Refs: | Naoko Chino, in her "All About Particles" book, has the "in order to" sense listed. |
|
4. | A* 2017-03-19 23:22:23 Robin Scott | |
Comments: | I cut down the frankly ridiculous number of glosses for the first sense. I removed the "I tell you/you should do" sense because it's confusing and not really a separate sense. のに is used in all sorts of ways that can only be properly explained in a textbook and grammar dictionary. This is one such example. I think there's an argument for removing the "in order to" sense because it's just the nominalising の + に (not a particle like the other senses). If we keep it, there should probably be a note to highlight this. |

Comments: | For the record, I think the ngram numbers are slightly misleading because you wouldn't say 今日は最悪の日だった, only 今日は人生最悪の日だっ た。etc. (confirmed with native informant), which is also part of why I question whether this really is a "true" adj-no. With this in mind, I think having adj-na first is sensible. |

Comments: | To tell the truth, I've still not figured out what a "true adj-no" is yet (it's more complicated than I first thought) but I think I would consider this [adj-no]. 最悪の日 doesn't mean "day of the worst case" but rather "worst/terrible day". I'd put [adj-no] first for that sense. Agree with the new [col] sense but I think "disgusting"/"repulsive" are more appropriate for 最低 than 最悪. Adverbial usage is [col] so I think it needs to be a separate sense. Also cleaner this way. |

Comments: | I think 最悪の mainly refers to "worst case", etc., so I'm not really sure this is a what Robin would call a true adj-no. Either way, I don't think adj-no should come first. I merged sense 1 and 2 (the adv sense) and created a new sense for the more casual but very common usage (which can't be used adverbially and essentially not as adj-no either, from my understanding) |

At one time this was more true, but nowadays there are numerous roguelikes that utilize graphics. I am not familiar with the linked term "@系", but if it means the same thing as roguelike then it should probably be updated as well. |

Comments: | I marked it as [col] (and added the English slang glosses) because it's not a technical term. From Wikipedia: "日本では2000年代にインターネットの電子掲示板やブログなどのメディアを通じて紹介され、その異様な雰囲気の光景にいつしかダム穴という名前が付けられ話題を呼んでいる" The article also describes the word as a "俗称" in the opening sentence. I've added "spillway" to the 2nd and 3rd glosses because that's how they tend to be used. |
