Let's close this one off for now. It can be revisited if we look more deeply into POSs.
16. A* 2018-03-29 01:57:10  Marcus Richert <...address hidden...>
  Comments:
I've kept out of this until now, but I'm in general
agreement with Robin that here are cases where の is
truly adjectival, and others where it's clearly not, but
just an "of", of sorts. 結婚, like Robin mentioned, is a
good example of the second category.

There's still some merit to adding "adj-no" as a
separate sense with separate adjectival glosses for not-
truly-adjectival usage of の in entries like this one,
like both eij and gg5 do. It's good for reverse
searches, sure, but more importantly, it's also helpful
to translators trying to come up with the right English
term for a Japanese word.

That said, GG5 usually splits out every PoS, e.g.
they'll usually lead with noun definitions, followed by
~な and separate adjectival definitions, ~する, and so
on. If we're not following their example on splitting n
and adj-na, etc., I don't think it makes much sense to
treat adj-no different from any other PoS.
15. A* 2018-03-23 01:19:00  Robin Scott <...address hidden...>
  Comments:
I don't want to expend any more effort on this debate so I'm going to let it go. Feel free to accept the amendment. I just want it on the record that I disagree.

It does feel like no one gets what I'm saying. To me it seems quite obvious that 金融のグローバル化 doesn't demonstrate [adj-no] usage any more than 数学の問題 (mathematical problem) or 企業の体質 (corporate culture) do. They're trivial cases we can forget about.

After 3 months this needs some resolution.
I'm in the adj-no camp on this, and as the references/examples above show, I think it's pretty clearly in Robin's category 1.
Since it would be good to have reverse lookups for "monetary" and "financial", I'm going to propose a second sense just for adj-no.

("squint" has other meanings besides the one intended here.
"strabismus" is a rather technical term.)
But it seems you are not supposed to mix POS in the glosses.
However, "cross-eye" or "cross-eyedness" do not seem very natural.
Is it OK to add "cross-eyed"?

This might be one of the proportionally rarest kanji forms I've ever seen
痛い	9757936	100.0%
甚い	110	0.0%

But as [3] (and only as [3]), this gets some use:
甚く	4732	0.0%
  Comments:
Big note: sankoku makes a dedicated entry for 甚く・痛く, and does *not* include sense [3] under 痛い at all. Highly unusual for an adjective. [3] may be [arch] as [adj-i].

Can't say "esp. 甚い" on [3], since [3] is [uk], and 痛く is still more common than 甚く. Fair enough that [3] is pretty much the only place 甚 is used. As daijs notes, when it is used it is not is いたい, but as いたく, which we have a separate entry for(where 甚い is not [rK]).

5 (甚い)程度のはなはだしいさま。*****多く、連用形を用いる。→甚(いた)く******

Curious how [suf] should apply to [3]. We don't use [suf] for adjectives like 深い (興味深い, and 20+ similar entries). Seems to be reserved for things like にくい、やすい、etc. that modify verb stems (食べやすい、読みにくい) or くさい with [id] meanings ("smells-like"/seems-like). I don't see how [3] could possibly do this...)

===

Aside: strong agree with Marcus from some years back on [int] "ouch!". I can't think of a more natural Japanese interjection than that.
https://japaneseparticlesmaster.xyz/itai-in-japanese/
but can also work as an interjection, especially in speaking, to mean ‘ouch’ in Japanese.

(a) if we're having this we should either drop the に or add the more common version as well;
(b) GG5 gives it as "Kōbō Daishi" rather than Kukai. Same person, but it matches 弘法/こうぼう better;
(c) it's also an example sentence. I've unlinked it as it's not particularly useful.

Looking at the definitions in daij, it's generally held,
a pithy observance of nature of the law, so → proverb.
Second gloss is a little "weak"/maybe unnecessary.
_
I went with "aren't caught by the net" rather than "slip
out through the net" because it sounds pretty bizarre -
I get an enormous fish not getting caught by a
fisherman's net, but not slipping through it). I'm not
sure which would be the more correct reading of 漏らす
here though.

  Comments:
Aligning with 去る者は日々に疎し. In spite of n-grams, the "grammatically modern" form with は seems to be the best form to learn. Google news is a small, dead draw. On twitter, 去る者日々に疎し has about 13 hits this year. は is somewhere north of 100. Reference materials (some at least) head with the は form. Imdas has only は.

Could xref both [1] and [2], but it looks like we avoid the double ref in these simple cases?

  Comments:
Just made an edit to 風樹の嘆, and pointed it at this entry.

"when you will wish" was not grammatical, which prompted me to edit to, something....

Gloss #1 aims to be literal. I don't think that "want to be filial" in isolation makes a lot of sense in English. I have a similar reluctance toward "I want to show filial piety", I feel like an indirect object is needed. Another possible literal gloss:

  when you want to show filial piety to your parents, they're already gone;

For the second gloss, I've taken the imidas explanation(when you understand the hardships of your parents...) and tried to arrive at something more relatable/analogous to Western experience (since we don't really do filial piety here...). "It's too late to repay" tries to capture "you want to repay", which is the 孝行のしたい bit. It's ends up being ambiguous about the parents being dead-dead, but technically I think the original is as well? "It's too late to thank them" seems less ambiguous about them being dead, but "thank" could be a one-off gesture, and not a change in behavior (which repayment would require).

Well, best I could come up with. I won't take it personally if the gloss isn't kept.

Whether we’re talking life in general or we’re talking homesteading it rings true. 100% of the seeds you never plant will never sprout. We never plant that seed to even give it a chance to grow and bring forth fruit.

  Comments:
I've just proposed an entry for "nothing comes from nothing", which has a standard translation into Japanese:
無からは何も生じない

"Nothing comes from nothing" seems to be primarily a philosophical argument about the nature of creation, and much less a parable about the importance of effort and/or hard work. See my comments on the 無からは何も生じない entry for more details, I do not think these entries should be linked.

By prettying-up the "literal" gloss ever so slightly, I don't think any further glosses are necessarily needed. I think the meaning is self-evident, all of my English-language references are just examples of this idea. I don't think there is a "fixed" English equivalent, though.

Googling around, I found a somewhat catchy English-language gloss that is floating around the internet. The source is unknown(anonymous). I think the literal gloss stands well enough on its own, so I wouldn't mind if the explanatory gloss is dropped, but maybe it's helpful to include anyway.

If the old gloss goes back, I think the word "good" should be inserted (よい結果は得られない)
> don't expect [good] things to happen on their own

====

Small note on Rene's comment(2017) - I would avoid any expression based on "reap what you sow" here. This pair is almost always used with a negative connotation.
