  Comments:
as i recall, steven pinker is picky about things like "generally, this is not a problem", which he advises against, as opposed to "this is generally not a problem", which he says is okay. (as i recall, he think that starting a sentence with an adverb doesn't make sense, at least not in the way intended.) so i guess you could make an argument for two senses, but i don't see it

I'm struggling with this one. When a split like this is proposed I look at the Tatoeba/Tanaka sentences to align examples. There are 51 sentences with this term, and to be frank I can't decide which sense they should be aligned too.
Robin, can you look at http://www.edrdg.org/cgi-bin/wwwjdic/wwwjdic?1Q̤_0__ and indicate a couple of examples for each sense?

I propose having two senses.

The indirect language here isn't doing any favors for the intelligibility of this sense, which I think is already difficult to understand at a glance.

Daijs is the only ref with a "lining" sense so I dropped those glosses as well.
