Comments: | I understand what you are saying, but there are other ways of thinking about this. I prefer to view やばい, ヤバい and ヤバイ as the same word. Thus I view やばかない as an inflected form of ヤバイ. I think you are attaching too much importance to the hiragana/katakana difference. |
|
9. | A 2016-09-13 23:50:54 Jim Breen <...address hidden...> | |
Comments: | The point is that ヤバイ usually won't inflect. Having said that, I see ヤバクナイ gets 559 in the n-grams, and while ヤバクナカッタ doesn't score there, it can be seen in 2ch posts and Tweets. |

There is support of some usage of から元気 being an alternative form of 空元気, e.g. that chiebukuro ref, but when I looked at the sorts of patterns they occurred in, they were very different. Still I think カラ元気 and から元気 should go in. |

Comments: | I think the proposed change was pretty much in line with what's in daij etc. The "Dutch courage" mention in prog was specifically a translation of "酒の上の空元気だよ" and not 空元気 by itself (same in 新和英中辞典). "bravado" just seems off (prog's ei-wa for example gives "bravado" as "からいばり" with no mention of 空元気, which I think makes more sense) |
