Refs: | daijs does say 「押忍」とも当てて書く。 And it's worth pointing out it doesn't seem to have been uk at the time the ngrams were compiled either, some 15 years ago. |
12. | A 2022-06-27 02:18:07 Jim Breen <...address hidden...>
Refs: | Koi, Daijisen, GG5 - none show any kanji. |
Comments: | Obviously it's becoming fashionable in places like Twitter to use kanji for this. The arrival of IMEs has encouraged this. A pity vwe can't tag as "formerly uk". |
11. | A 2022-06-27 01:44:42 Marcus Richert <...address hidden...>
Refs: | twitter this morning, again, past 10 min: 押忍 14 おっす 1 オッス 3 おす maybe 1 (the tweet was, in full "おすおす") オス 0 (but it's possible I might have missed one among all the 雄's) Again, the ngrams 押忍 125476 71.4% おっす 27607 15.7% オッス 22594 12.9% Several game etc. titles use the kanji 押忍!闘え!応援団 押忍!番長 押忍!!空手部 押忍!!ふんどし部! 愛があるから押忍! KOIZUMI 押忍!ケツ毛トリマー LEDライト搭載 (butt hair trimmer by https://www.koizumiseiki.jp/) could find about the same amount of products/manga with kana オッス!少林寺 ドラゴンボール オッス!帰ってきた孫悟空と仲間たち!! オッス! トン子ちゃん オッス!ムシキングッス!! オッス!はるかちゃん (if there's any おす or オス's, I'm having a hard time finding them) |
Comments: | I don't see any evidence for it being more commonly written with kana. It's perfectly possible it's more common in transcripts, books etc. as "おっす" but that's only one specific arena and probably not the one that's the most relevant for an informal male greeting. The young males using it on Twitter obviously prefer 押忍. |

Comments: | I think it really comes down to frequency of use for senses. We've followed the usual approach in modern dictionaries of having the senses in frequency order. We have the [lit] tag to highlight cases where they differ significantly. In this case I don't think it's an issue, but when there's a common figurative sense and a rare literal sense, I'd really think it's most appropriate for the common one to lead. |

Comments: | dunno. probably a question for the mailing list rather than a random entry though. -- for the record, wiki policy, which we sometimes follow, says: "In general, do not use CE or AD unless required to avoid ambiguity (e.g. The Norman Conquest took place in 1066 not 1066 CE nor AD 1066) or awkwardness (January 1, 1 AD not January 1, 1). On the other hand, Plotinus was a philosopher living at the end of the 3rd century AD will avoid unnecessary confusion. Also, in He did not become king until 55 CE the era marker makes it clear that "55" does not refer to his age. Alternatively, He did not become king until the year 55. If the era is shown for the initial date in a range, then use it for the final date as well: either from 450 to 200 BCE or from 450 BCE to 200 BCE, but definitely from 100 BCE to 200 CE. (See § Ranges, below.)" |
