Comments: | Rene, that note comes under the 3rd sense. There's no need to list (or even mention) ぱん because it's merely a rendaku reading. ばん, however, is the only valid reading for 版 (regardless of what comes before it) when used as a suffix in the first sense. Daijr even has an entry for ばん which redirects to はん (版). If I can't convince you to keep it in the list of readings, a note like the one I've written is an acceptable compromise. |

Comments: | When I started looking at these edits my first thought was "why do we still have this?" It's from a range of entries which were added in bulk about 15 years aho which turned out to have a lot of very obvious constructions. I think it may as well stay now, given the Tanaka linkages (I don't want to have to go and reconstruct them.) As for 家をたてる, I think it should stay. This data is used by several text-glossing systems, and having variant surface forms for these sorts of expressions helps them quite a bit. I wouldn't lose sleep if it went, as it's ~0.5% of usage, but it's harmless. |

Comments: | But you might be right about adding 家をたてる. A few weeks ago I wrote a script that matches the Tanaka corpus against JMDict and reports discrepancies. I have been using that to add prio tags, add and remove [uk] tags, add missing surface forms, etc. But maybe I've reached the bottom of the barrel now. |

Comments: | Is it really necessary to acknowledge the kana form of 建てる? It's an extremely common word and I would put 99% of instances of 家をたてる down to 変換ミス. The same goes for similar entries. I'm not even sure this entry should exist at all. Since when has "build a house" been considered an expression? Is it any more noteworthy than "build a shed"? |

Everyone was glad to hear the news. | There was no one who didn't rejoice at the news. Daijirin makes a point of it being used that way? Yes, and a point of it meaning anyone/everyone. How can the proposed amendment make the entry much less useful ...when the previous entry is the complete opposite of the truth? How is that, at all useful? Not misleading? According to the previous entry, 誰一人知らぬこと translates as "a thing no one doesn't know", which is to say "a thing everyone knows" ...when it actually translates as "a thing not a single person knows" |

17. | A 2019-09-08 00:57:36 Robin Scott <...address hidden...> | |
Comments: | I'd just like to add that we include "no one"/"nobody" here for the same reason other JE dictionaries do: it's helpful. These are the most common English translations. It's the same with 誰も. "誰も知らない" translates to "no one knows", not "everyone doesn't know". This difference in structure between English and Japanese is not especially difficult to grasp, especially in context. I think excluding these glosses would actually be more confusing to a leaner. |

Comments: | "with neg. verb" is our way of indicating 下に打消の語を伴う as in koj or (…ない) as in gg5 I am restoring the version that was approved by Robin, Jim, and (now) me, which matches what GG5 has. Rather than re-editing an entry approved by three of the editors, this is an issue for the mailing list. The entry for 誰一人 is not the place to relitigate how an entire class of entries is written. |
