"A drool bib has one job: absorb a baby’s drool. As far as its practical purpose, that’s pretty much it. Because a drool bib isn’t for
catching food, it doesn’t have to protect the entire front of your child’s torso or come with a big pocket in front. It only needs to
cover a baby’s neck and chest."

Seven Michigan State players have been charged with criminal assault in connection with a tunnel brawl with Michigan players on October 29.

Or, search the news for "charged with criminal assault"

Investigators were led to Finn shortly after an investigation into former county police corporal Darryl Wormuth. Wormuth was charged with criminal assault after allegedly grabbing a handcuffed 17-year-old boy by the throat.

Obviously the term is also used for sexual assaults.

  Comments:
I wonder if there is an issue here that we didn't used to charge men with criminal assault over brawling as much as we do today, and that "criminal assault" has lost an older implied connotation.

...

Came here to "correct" what I thought was an oversight, and saw that this was discussed and decided on deliberately. If you see this term on jisho.org, it looks like:
(crime of) rape; criminal assault Law ("Law" in gray).

While the goal of "people will infer sexual connotations from the first term" is understandable, [law] appears affixed to the second term. It's possible to read this as "colloquially used for [rape], but as a legal matter this is the general term for any criminal assault".

If you search "criminal assault" in jmdict, this is currently the *only* matching entry, which also increases the chance of misunderstanding.

I don't agree that "criminal assault" is limited to an understood euphemistic reference for rape. If you'd asked me out of the blue, "what is criminal assault", I would have said "someone attacks/injures another in a fight and got arrested/charged." "rape" would not have entered my mind. If you say "the woman was criminally assaulted by the male perpetrator", inferences would obviously be made. But "charged with criminal assault" is also what you'll get if one man punches another in a bar fight.

I was going to just insert "sexual" in the middle of "criminal assault", but I think Tom's point from 2016 was well made. From a legal perspective "rape" in English (as far as I can see) requires penetration, as does the legal term 強姦罪. "Sexual assault" does not. I don't see the value of downgrading the term as a gloss. (people can do that on their own if they want)

And given that 強姦罪 *requires* penetration, "criminal assault" seems like a massive understatement. I don't know what the other J-E dictionary motivations was here. If eijiro and ルミナス exclusively glossed this as "criminal assault", that seems way off, and it's hard to imagine a reason other than not wanting to include sensitive English vocabulary in their dictionary.

For comparison, the jmdictdb entries for レイプ and 強姦 are already glossed:
レイプ rape; sexual assault
強姦 rape; sexual assault

In this case, as a matter of [law], this would appear to need to be

*** criminal sexual assault (including penetration)

I'm not advocating for or against such a gloss. That's a matter of everyone's sensibilities.

The value of including "criminal assault" (especially when we don't even have entry in jmdictdb for the actual legal equivalent), seems to me to be outweighed by the more serious issues attached to this term. Translating 強姦罪 as "criminal assault" loses a whole lot of information, and blindly translating "criminal assault" as 強姦罪 could represent a massive error in modern use.

There was no clear difference between the original two senses so I decided to have a go at redoing this entry.
-
None of the Japanese sources I checked make much of a distinction between "fear", "nervousness", and "surprise" despite being (in my opinion) quite different different feelings (albeit with some overlap).
After reading dozens of sentences, I've come up with two senses that I believe cover the contemporary uses of this word.
-
The first sense encompasses the feelings of "fear" and "nervousness" in a way that satisfies the "気後れする" and "おじけづく/気持ちが萎縮する" definitions listed in Daijr and Daijs respectively. Some example sentences:
-
1. 大舞台でびびってしまう
2. ここでびびっては負けだ、強気でいけ
3. 言おうと意識していてもびびっちゃって言えない
-
The feelings covered by the second sense all include an element of surprise. Another difference with this sense is that the feeling isn't necessarily negative (as shown by examples 6 and 10).
-
4. いきなり携帯が鳴りだしてビビったわ!
5. 一瞬幽霊かと思ってビビった
6. とても美味しくてびびった
7. 突然Outlook.comからアカウント利用停止メールが来てビビった
8. 初めて東京を訪れてビビった場所ランキング
9. 今でも変わってなくてビビった校則
10. iMovie初めて使ったけど使いやすくてびびった
-
I've tagged the second sense as "colloquial" but a case could be made that that's not always the case. According to Daijr, even the first sense is colloquial but I have trouble accepting that given that びびる has been used in that way since the Heian period (see 3rd ref.).
-
The third sense comes from Daijr and AFAIK is no longer used.
-
There's some original research here so feel free to disagree/make further changes.
-
Finally, I don't have n-gram data but a Google search tells me that the katakana representation of this word is more common.

生糸(SILK FILAMENT)、絹紡糸(SPUN SILK YARN)も貴重ですが、紬糸(SILK NOIL YARN )は日本では手に入れにくい素材になっています。菱型と三角形の帯で面取りし、懐かしい味わいの紬の手まり(紅の花)です。

100% tsumugi silk yarn on cone, japanese silk yarn for knitting, weaving and crochet, per 100g
This famous japanese yarn - 100% tsumugi silk - is very beautiful and soft. This is a real tsumugi silk yarn, NOT the italian bourette/noil silk also wrongly called tsumugi.
It is produced in Japan.

CATEGORY 紬糸 Silk Noil

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tsumugi_(cloth)
It is a tabby weave material woven from yarn produced using silk noil, short-staple silk fibre (as opposed to material produced using longer, filament silk fibres).
Originally, tsumugi was homemade from domestic or wild-gathered silkworm cocoons that had been broken by hatching[8] or were irregularly formed.[4]

https://thesilkyweave.com/2016/01/10/tsumugi-silk-what-is-that/
Tsumugi silk – what is that?
Posted on January 10, 2016 by Sophie
I have been asked twice recently about tsumugi silk. Well, the short answer is that tsumugi (紬) is a yarn spun from the silk waste, with nubs and some unevenness. Not shiny, but has a good grip – excellent choice for a weft if you’re thinking about a baby wrap, a shawl, or a scarf. And if it is spun firmly, it can be a warp too.

In other words, the silk noil or bourette silk, known to the Western world, is tsumugi silk.
  Comments:
I think this should be two entries. 紬糸 refers only to a particular kind of silk 糸 used in 紬, and not all silk thread(in particular I've come to learn "silk noir" or "raw silk"). An xref to my now-edited 紬 would make the meaning clear with little effort.

"tsumugi silk yarn" is a good gloss in the marketplace. I think in Japanese that 紬糸 is probably a good translation of "silk noir", but in English "tsumugi" should only refer to Japanese products...

For 紡ぎ糸, I just proposed an related entry for the probably-more-practical:
手紡ぎ糸
hand-spun yarn

I think 大副 should be in its own entry, as 大輔 is more general. I'll propose it.
Those sites I referenced seem to indicate that だゆう was the Meiji-period reading, and that would make it a 2/3 split from 大輔/たいふ. I don't mind if they were in the one entry with notes on the Meiji/ritsuro senses.
